We have taken in a 5yr old female pom from an elderly female tonight. She could no longer care for the dog properly and called wanting to know if we would be interested in taking her.We said yes that we would give it a try. I know absolutely nothing about this breed. Can someone please give me some information? I know that she definitely needs her teeth cleaned.I am going to call tomorrow and set up a vet and grooming appointment.Does anyone know how much it costs to have their teeth cleaned? It has to be done pronto!
Teeth cleaning is a prety big ordeal, it requires the dogs be put under anesthesia for it. I'm guessing that it will cost between $100 and $200 just offhand, at least your dog is small so wont' require much anesthesia! You can avoid this in the future by feeding dry kibble and brushing the dog's teeth a couple times a week.
You can check her registration by going to the AKC website - under AKC store there is a place to type in name of dog or registration number and it will give you information on how AKC has the dog registered (male/female coloring). My sister has always had Poms, and I think they are prone to teeth problems. She has always had problems anyway. Really important to brush their teeth and give them a Greenie once in a while.
You'll love your new pomeranian. that's all i've ever had! Brush the hair at least once a week. The more often you brush his hair, the less you'll have to bathe him. If you do bathe him, make sure you dry the hair completely. Poms have such a thick coat, if the under hair is left damp, it can cause heat spots which are reallt itchy!
For dentistry your looking at a few hundred. Depends on time under. It should include anesthetic time, injections(pen), and hospital care and of course the scaling, polishing and flushing + flouride. Teeth extractions will probly be extra. Extractions can be time consuming and difficult. But is worth it to get rotten teeth out asap. In some hospitals they will have a special dental month with reduced pricing. After the dental you have to properly brush to keep the hard tartar from forming. Don't rely on biscuits or bones. Ask the vet about T/D diet it breaks of tartar while eating it. You could feed as a diet or to mix in her food. Most dogs go ga ga over it because the fat content is actually on the outside of the kibble and the dogs like the smell. (small kibble & large kibble)-it comes in 2 size kibble..After the dental get them to groom the dog. They could comb out the dog properly when the dog is asleep, so she doesn't feel a thing.
How wonderful! A new member of the family! I am very happy that you did such a good deed. How are things going so far? I do not know much about Pomeranians either, but I will tell you what I know. Pomeranians do fine in an apartment with little or no yard. They are classified as a Toy Breed. It will only cost approx. $15 a month to feed them. They are not hypoallergenic, and hsould be kept away from people who are allergic to dogs. The Pomeranian is a tiny breed. They average 5-7 inches, 3-8 pounds. They are high energy indoors, but only need 10 miniutes of outdoor exercise time daily. They are somewaht stubborn, and are not the easiest breed to train. They have a dominant personality, and do best as only dogs, or with other submisive Pomeranians. They are moderaltey protective, and if needed, they will bite an intruder. The Pomeranian's coat is long and dense. They come in all solid colors, black, multi'colored, red, orange, and tan. They do shed a little. Pomeranians need to be groomed 4 times a week and do need some trimming/stripping. This is all I know about Pomeranians. If she needs her teeth cleaned, than I suggest taking her to the vet. You sound like a very good, reasponsible owner. I have no idea at the cost of a teeth cleaning, but I estimate it to be around $500. Bad teeth are common in small breeds.
Poms need a lot of care. If you breed the dog then you will have to saprat them. I would get AKC because if u get a a none rag. they r not worth any thing. People love poms and if u get a baby they are so bad.
