I feel like this is the only subject I ever write about. So I've had the dog for 2 months, and he's 4 months old. I've been pretty good about preventing accidents, but then he'll have one when I least expect it. I know he can hold it--he does all night. So I guess he obviously just doesn't understand yet that outside is for potty. And on a day like today, when it's raining cats and dogs (no pun intended), fuhgeddaboutit. He won't even go outside.
What are other peoples' experiences? About how old was your pup when he was finally trained?
Our last pup was 4 weeks old...I use a specific term with them..Be a good girl(or boy) and after hearing it so many times that's the signal to go out and do what they need to do. Of course it's always followed with a treat. One of my collies wont go out if she even thinks its raining....she has waited 18 hours to go..I had even called the vet because I got concerned but she's fine just stubborn
At 4 months my puppy might have a rare accident. At 5 months she is finally hitting the spot every time. We have a little Min Pin and she goes inside on a potty pad. It is nice not to have to follow her around when she would go out of the room. You'll get there. Each one seems to be different.
We did use treats as an incentive for her to do her business in the right place. They learn that pretty quick. It is just getting them to know that they have to do it every time.
My JRT's are now housebroken.. at least when they feel like it. It's very frustrating sometimes. Chewy is 7 months and Roxy is 13 months. I would think by 6 months or so... after that its an issue. ( Of wills, I think).
