I am about to get my second rainbow lorikeet. Has anyone here had one before? I only had my first one for 3 weeks about 2 months ago. He got a big fright when his cage collapsed and turned wild again and wouldn't come to us and would shake in his cage when we were near (poor baby!). The breeder tried to re-train him when we went on holidays but he got too scared everytime someone would go near him so she is keeping him for breeding and giving me a new baby one in a few weeks. His name will be Murphy! Anyone have any hints as to how we can make Murphy really really tame? I am a bit paranoid after the last one! Cheers

How did his cage get knocked over and collapse? How big is it's cage? Is it not sturdy? A lory should have an extremely large and safe cage. I have had parrots for over 10 years. I used to breed them. I have never owned a lory but I know they are high energy birds, that eat only nectar and fruit, because of their tongue. http://webcrafting.com/catering/VEROLINKS.htm is the lory page and e-mail group. If there has been trauma with a bird, you can not expect the bird to not be scared. The best you can do is leave the bird on the gym or in the cage, where ever the bird wants, and just talk sweet to her, and give her fruit. It may take months before the bird is comfortable, and acept being scritched on the head. Have you gone to the vet to make sure the bird was not injured? Ella's mom

i think for taming you would talk to him daily and put your hand in the cage daily and when he is calm with that try to move your hand toward him daily, eventually getting close enough to scratch him and have him on your finger. we had a parakeet who we got to where every night at my daughter's bedtime (we would move the cage into her room at bedtime) the parakeet would come up to the side of the cage to get her tummy and feet scratched. it was so cute!

Thank you. I am very familiar with birds, from having them. I now just own an Amazon, but at one time I had 27. I bred gouldian finches and scarlet chested parakeets. From being an illustrator, and at one time illustrating a childrens book of parrots, I collect bird care books. I really love antique ones, but I know the info is not as accurate. I am learning about dog care, but I read everything. I would die if the internet ceased to exist, as it is a wealth of info. I need to know Ella is getting the best of care. The only other thing I know like the back of my hand is gardening. This is my profession, and my passion. Ella's mom

No. Actually I do not. I have a bunch of books and my old client taught lectures at gardening clubs. She had degrees in horticulture and other similar stuff. She had cancer and died in September, but I learned alot from her in the few years I worked for her, and before that i worked for another gardening finatic. Then I would get clients on my own. Yahoo has a bunch of lists, though. I was once on one where you could swap seeds. I just bought a green house so I am very excited about seeds. I have tons of plants that are potted in my back yard I brought with me when I moved. Ella's mom

Hi there, i hope you get lucky with you new lory,.but lorikeets or ringnecks, if you don play with those birds all the time they get wild fast,.very active birds they need alot room, been in the cage is all the time is not a good thing,. i have one now hes name is max, crazy bird he will even follow me to the shower,. not because he wants to be with is coz they love water,i have a hrd time sometimes to take this boy out the shower,.good luck

What? They look like they are dyed? Maybe the ones you see around....not the ones here in Australia!!! My bird loves showers too....he will jump off his cage or the couch and walk in and find me in the shower so I will pick him up and put him under the water. Weird. He is the tamest bird I have ever met!

i have a green cheeked conure- she was hand raised from birth and is the tames bird ever. she is toilet trained too so that she says 'kiwi go poo' when she needs to go and then we take her to the toilet. it is hilarious. she is wonderful fun!!

nope i am from toronto, canada.

i do have a dalmatian, her name is dalia and she is going to be 12 years old on august the 8th, you'd never know it though, she still acts and looks like a puppy *knock on wood*

I have just been bought a rainbow lorikeet it is 4 months old and tame, keeps jumping out of cage and running round the floor - is this normal??? have been trying to handle it everyday just keeps running up my arm to sit on my neck and eat my hair!!! has anyone any advice or tips for me also not sure on the the constistancy the wet food should be??

Well, I would spend plenty of time around her, make slow movements, dont pet her quite yet and work you way up. Be patient it might take a while. Good luck :).

I would like to get a bigger bird and have found a really awesome rainbow lorikeet breeder and I was wondering: are lorikeets really as messy as they are reputed to be? I would like to give it the run of the house but if they really squirt liquid poo everywhere the landlord will not be happy, that doesn't sound easy to clean up!

Hey i have a rainbow lorikeet and had her for almost a year now she is cute but i would love some techniques on making her more hand trained ,being able to talk and less biting
