I was in a mall in Nashvile and went into the pet store to see what they had. I will not buy a dog that is in a pet store but I couldn't resist walking in. They had a white bull terrier that was priced at $1700. I don't know if it was male or female, I just overheard someone asking the price. Also had a small male maltese that was selling for $1200. Is this the going price in pet stores for these poor dogs or is that too much? They were also advertising a winter sale so that could possibly be the sale price.
look in the paper in you area. see what the breeders charge and dont ever buy from a pet store. Anyone who breeds dogs and cares and loves them would never sell them to a pet store. Pet stores buy alot of dogs and dont buy them for very much money so the ppl they are buying them from dont care about selling healthy well bred dogs they only care about the free money they get from dogs they put little effort into. There is a place in Omaha, ne its a large kennel that sells tons of puppies. They sell mixed breeds starting at 200.00 and pure breds all the way up to 1500. One time my mom asked how much they would buy a litter of bulldogs for the lady said 100.00 up to 300.00 per puppy depends on looks. We seen boston terriers with full tails for 600.00. I was shocked. They also had a respatory viris go through the place and they euthanized all the puppies instead of letting ppl take them and treat them at their own vets. But ppl still buy from there. PPl will never learn and the mills will never stop.
I always wonder what the price range is for dogs. I think alot has to do where you are located. But, I was looking for a Maltese breeder online (maybe getting on in a couple years) and I found one that really seemed to be reputable. She wanted $3000 for a pet quality female with a spay/neuter contract. As much as I'd love one I think $1000 is my limit ;) I think pets stores are way over priced. People in the paper can charge just as high and be a BYB, it's so hard to find a reputable breeder.
Oh and to answer your question yes, that is about the going rate for a pet store. 2 people I know who bought from petstores a couple yrs ago paid $1200.

Don't feel TOO sorry for the pets in the petstore- they've got it much easier than their parents and siblings do. :(
Yes- petstores are always, always overpriced. Their stock is never on par with better breeders, which makes the pricing even more outrageous. But alas- people who buy puppies and kittens from petstores are often too lazy or spontaneous to bother putting in the work that's required to find a good breeder... so I suppose it's fair, in a way, that they're being completely ripped off. :)
