Please, please help me, i have an adorable pup of 1 month but i cant get him to use his newspaper to eliminate. Now and then he gets it right but mostly it is wherever he is standing. Any sensible ideas would be much appreciated.
I use a special word or phrase...Ususally I say...out..be a good boy ( or girl) then i pick them up and plunk them outside. I have never used paper because I don't want them to think they should go i the house at all. At that age it takes doing this about once an hour if you're home and a lot of praise when they go. If the pup isn't getting it make sure to say no in a stern voice. The last pup I did this with took 3 days and no more accidents. Of course, it may have been the treat when he did go. I also teach them...Shame on you... I adopted an 8 year old collie who needed to be housebroken. She was a little tougher but by a weeks end she was fine. Good luck
I would suggest that you regulary take the puupy outside for him/her to do their business. then i would put newspaper down straight away incase of any mishaps. dont worry they get the hang of it eventually. also praise the puppy when they go outside , then it learns what is right.
Your puppy is very young. You can start training but you will probably have to have patience at this age. When I took my puppy out to potty, I would say "Go Potty" when she was doing her business and give her a treat. Then I started telling her to "Go Potty" when I wanted her to go. If she did as told, I would give her a treat. She knows what I mean and will go when told now (as long as she does need to). After she would wake up, I would not give her a chance to go inside. I would pick her up, grab the leash and take her outside. I was always afraid she would go inside otherwise and I wanted to try to help her not make mistakes. Good luck and don't expect too much yet.
I agree Basset_Lover, one month is way to early to expect a pup to be potty training. They're not usually weaned and the mother is still cleaning after them at that age. Give it some time. Just think though, he's got a head start for when he is old enough.
Is your pup 1 month old, or have you had it for a month...there is a big difference. Some dogs just don't like newspaper. I personally wouldn't train a dog to go in the house no matter what the reasons might be. I live in NE Wisconsin and the winters here can be nasty..but when I got my puppy last February...it was very cold and I'll tell you it wasn't fun to go out in the middle of the night in the snow and below zero...but I did. Training takes lots of time and consistancy. Like others said...always use the same term...I used "let's go outside" then "hurry up" over and over till she went. Then, I praised and praised...and gave a treat right away. It is important to get them to associate going in the correct place as a really good thing. Make sure you use a higher pitched voice when praising.
