Pekingese/Shih tzu Cross Breed~Another Old topic

I bought a 6 week old Pek/Shih tzu yesterday. I had never heard of this cross breed. Is there a name for it like Pekzu or something? I was also wondering if there is anything in particular I need to look for as far as health to make sure it is ok (there was only a 3 day guarantee). I am planning on trying to take it to the vet tomorrow, but I am broke after paying $200 for the dog. Is this a good price or are these dogs even considered a real breed. I had a shih tzu named Poky die a couple of weeks ago and thought it was time to get a pup. Any pictures of this type of dog at any age are welcome and any advice on how to care for them too. I have an 18 month old daughter so any advice on how to teach kids and dogs to get along would be great lol

also, is it normal for a pups nose to run and squek sometimes when they breathe? I am so afraid of losing another dog!

Teach your daughter to be very gentle with the dog. Dogs, especially small dogs, do not like to be squeezed by kids, etc. Don't let her carry the dog around or run at the dog, as the dog may consider this threatening.

And you really cannot tell what this dog will be like. It can take after either breed the dog is mixed with. Try googling it and see if anything comes up. Good luck.

Thanks for your advice! I am definately not letting my little girl carry the puppy around or be rough. She is a very mature 18 month old so she is actually gentle and kind and always has been except she gets a little jealous of the attention I give the puppy! I do not ever leave them unsupervised or anything though and when she gets tired she acts up some by trying to not give me the puppy back when she is done holding it.
I actually spent two hours online googling, yahooing, and asking jeeves and I found NOTHING! Most cross breeds that I found were poodles. I really hope to find someone here with the same type of dog that can tell me about there dog, even though that is obviously no guarantee that my dog will be like it. Well, I hope to meet some other dog lovers here no matter what the breed ;-)

Welcome. Your new pup in just a mixed breed dog...I don't think you're going to find any info on it. The 3 day guarentee isn't very good. Did you get it from a breeder? I feel, $200.00 was a lot to pay for a mix and the runny nose I'd be consered with. Make sure you get it to the vet tomorrow...just to make sure.

Thanks for your reply. I feel a little taken advantage of. I got the dog from a breeder and was told I was getting "papers" and that it is a "registered" dog. Now, I have already gotten attached and won't take it back unless the vet says I need to tomorrow. I found this article on mixed breeds that tells it like it is in case anyone is interested...

Yes they do know how to pull your heart strings...that article pretty much says it. Sorry you got taken....lot and lots of people do, so don't feel so bad..I just hope the vet gives you a clean bill health. Just give the pup the very best you can and make sure you take real good care of it. I know you'll love it no matter what. Thanks for reviving a dead thread..

We can't promote breeders here, and even if we could, few people would hand over mutt breeders. Finding a decent reeder of that specific mix in northa america may be an oxymoron, try petfinder.com.

Hello,
I just bought a Pekishih, which is not a mix dog, it is a cross just like the pekipoo. As with the pekipoo, the pekishih is a registered breed. I had read a reply, and I thought even though this was about a year ago, I would clear this up. I have papers with my Pekishih, and she is the sweetest loving dog I have ever had. It is a joy to have her. They are very good with children also.

Pekishi is not a MUTT, it is a registered Breed, just like the pekipoo.

No Burdy its a mutt.There is million of them in the shelters.It had to be a crap registry for a mix to be registered.They are simply a peke ans shih tzu mix nothing more nothing less.Im not against mixed breeds but I just wnated to tell you they arent a purebred.

He was a lab/golden/I.setter/cocker/border collie mix

Anybody can register their dogs if you find the right registry. They do have registrys for mixed breeds. That does not make them a breed.

It is not a breed, it is a mix of two breeds which makes it a mutt. If it has papers, then I am going to guess it is with CKC (Continental KC) Low quality registries will register a mutt and give you a paper saying you own that mix...big deal, you already knew that, but now they have your money for typing it out for you.
I have nothing against mixes, just love it the same.

Well, thank you all for your reply, I just wanted to let all know: all info on shih tzu can be found at


http://home.earthlink.net/~rfrmac/Pages/Shih_Tzu.html and that if you read this carefully, you will note that Lhaso Apso was crossed with a Pekingese to product the Shih Tzu. So you can call the Pekingese/Shih Tzu a mutt or whatever you wish. But i do have AKC papers and they are just as good as any registered dog. I personally do not care anything about the papers, I trully enjoy my dog and anyone who is thinking about getting a Pekingese/Shih Tzu CROSS, (not mix) will certainly bring alot of joy to their life.

Nobody said they arent great dogs.I love BOTH breeds and have seen a ton of that mix and the purebreds in the shelters.You can NOT have AKC paper because they will not register a mix.Im sure its a great lil dog.I just know If I wnated one I could go to the shelter and get one.

Burdy - there is absolutely, positively NO way on earth you have AKC papers for this mixed breed dog. Not happening. There are some bogus registries like APRI, ConK, ACA that will register anything with a pulse, but the AKC is not one of them.

If an AKC breeder gave you papers on your mixed breed dog, that person is unethical and a plain outright liar.

The Shih Tzu was made by being cross breed with a pekinese and a Lasha Apso. So I wouldn't say it's a weird cross breed at all. It's just back to more natural roots :)

burdy, i hope you see this. don't let these people get you down. you will find that you can't ask a question about a mix bred without alot of unwanted replies. the pekingese, shihtzu is not a bad mix. it is normal for them to have a little bit of a runny nose, but i would still get a vet to check it out. As for CKC registering mutts. They will not give papers on a mix of 2 breeds that are a very uncommon mix. it has to be 2 breeds that are commonly bred, such as shihtzu/poodles or pekepoos. The papers actually state that it is a cross between the 2 breeds. Actually i don,t know if there is a name for them but i had one once and i called it a shih-peke.
