My cousin used to have one. It was a rough coat. It was a sweet dog to the family. If anyone else got near it he turned nasty. They wound up having him put down. Sorry. That probally wasnt the kind of answer you wanted. From what i have heard collies make great pets. I guess thiers was the exception.
I'm sure it was an exception. I have several. I also used to have a house full of foster kids. Never once did I ever have a collie even bother anyone except for the occasional lick. The kids loved them and 3 of the dogs became volunteers at Head Start and a couple of nursing homes.
We have had a collie in the family ever since my daughter was a baby and now I have grandchildren. Never once have we had one to try to bite, or be too rough with the kids. I will never be without one. The only problem I have with my "Callie" is that she wants to try to get into the lap of anyone sitting down. She may be to friendly....but we love her to death. We got her when she was 9 months old, and she is 3 now. Anyone with children, I would urge them to get a collie. We have other dogs, but the collie is a great kid and farm dog. As for the house, I have lung problems, and can't handle the hair, but we all love her and so does everyone who meets her.
ebulldog...glad to hear that someone else loves collies the way I do. Of course, when one wants to try to climb up on my lap they all try. And yes I agree as to how sweet and loving they are. When we got our first one my hubby was doubtful but now he is worse than me and that's one of the reasons we have so many.
Righ, Colliemom, collies are really special. As a child I love Lassie, of course, and always wanted one, so when I got grown, I got me one, and have had one ever since. My female isn't very big, but we had a male who was really tall. He was twice the size of Callie. We couldn't break him from chasing cars, and he meet his fate. With them being herding dogs, they sure do like to run things. Callie chases the cats, but they lay down and she lays down with them and they play. How many collies do you have, and do you breed them? We may be looking for one for the grandkids before long.
We had 6 but because of illness and old age we now have 4. No, I am not a breeder. I do rescue on my own. I got 2 just recently off petfinder.com. Where do u live as there are some really great rescue services that I know of and a few that are bad. I guess it's because I didn't need a dog with papers. The only breeder that I now of that's really great is a lady in Alabama tht breeds both rough and smooth. I have one blue merle and 3 sables.
i dont have a collie but i petsit for a woman who used to raise show and breed the roughcoated collies. she doesn't have as many now as she did when i first started opetsitting for her. a few of them got older as time went on and died of old / old age related diseases. but all of the ones she had were very nice dogs. they weren't raised with little kids but they were always good with my son.
