I have a 2yr old Male Tri-colored Beagle I would like to breed to either a pug or beagle female. We live in Maryland. Anyone interested?

Anyone can give me information as to where I can get a puggle in St Louis or very close to St. Louis

Here's my experience as a new puggle owner - four weeks and counting... (he's 11 weeks old)

Saw an ad in the paper, and not knowing what a puggle was, I googled the term. The cutest picture ever popped up. I started to read and since I live in NYC, i was instantly sold on the fact that the puggle has "low to medium energy" and "can be housetrained using a litterbox."

I made an appointment with the beagle breeder and went over one evening to look at the female puggles - female dogs being known for typically having a more calm demeanor than their male counterparts. Out of the seven 3 week old puggles available, my little guy - Topher, picked me by crawling into my lap, and burying himself between my torso and folded arm. Done. The next four weeks crawled by as I waited for him to finish his first round of vaccinations.

I was ultra-concerned about seperation anxiety from his family. Turned out not to be an issue. Topher immediately took a shining to me and had no seperation anxiety issues. I will say that in his 11th week, we do have some issues when I leave, but this is resolved by the manner in which I leave the room. If I don't distract him with an activity, he will cry for a minute or two. No longer than that though. The bigger issue is me being in the room, but having him in the pen or crate. He will cry for up to 10-15 minutes in an attempt to persuade me to let him out. I'll gladly take any advice as no toy will distract him. Fact is, I'm taking the path of letting him cry it out until he gets used to it.

To my utter amazement, he was 75% housetrained by the first week. I say 75% because accidents do happen with all puppies. But he would clearly let me know that it was time to go out by walking over to the door. I then purchased the litter box. Best invention ever! At first, he didn't know what to make of it. Neither did my neighbors who saw me following Topher with the pan... The trick for my puggle was to take his droppings and place it in the pan. I then place him in the pan and let him sniff around for himself. I removed the droppings and placed the pan in his pen area. I went to bed that night committed to the experiment - not getting up at 6AM to let him out. When I walked downstairs at 8AM, I could not have been more proud! He's 11 weeks old now and I have no issues with accidents as long as he can access the pan or me!

He learned "sit" within the first week with me, and "down" and "stay" by week 4. He's not such a big fan of "come."

My guy stops traffic with his face - in a good way. Literally had 10 people surrounding me on an NYC street corner this weekend. His temperment is perfect for it. Especially children - but I do have to hold him obviously. Left on his own, he's a jumper and a licker and a bit of a nipper of peoples fingers and toes too. However, none of it can be classified as malicious. 100% playful.
Topher's not at all affected by the presence of other dogs or cats or bunnies or whatever else is wanderiing around.

As for his energy level, its totally predictable. Given the chance outside, he goes from 0 to 60 in mere seconds and loves to run around. Just as fast, he can go from 60 to 0 and be asleep five minutes after a romp. Inside the house, he'll use his toys to work out his energy.

Here's the downside...
His barking and crying is high pitched. But again, it only happens at length if he and I are in the same room and he can't be with me.
His chewing is becoming more and more challenging. At the same time, he's a puppy! Of course he's going to chew! Frankly, its up to me to figure out how to appease him with the right objects to chew on. You get out what you put in on this one.
HATES the leash and the collar.

All in all, its been a 9 out of 10 on the experience level. if you aren't ready to deal with normal dog training stuff like teething/biting, or housetraining, then no dog is right for you.

I have a puggle now and find that she is very similar to the beagles I grew up with. She displays a great amount of beagle behavior--but then again, I have never owned a pug. She misbehaves from time to time, but no worse than any other puppy I've owned and I hate reading all these entries about puggles and how difficult they are. Before you buy/adopt/inherit/accept a dog please look into how much care they will require. It is unfair to blame something for being what it is--puggles are dogs, much like beagles--or any mutt for that matter, and they may require ample exercise. But they are loving, loyal and sweet. If you don't have a yard or can't walk an hour a day, don't get one.

I don't know why people argue so much about the pure breed thing--I always wonder about the dog breed--is there any breed on the planet with such vast diversity? Are there any animals that fall under the same classification that differ as much as the Great Dane does from the Chihuaha? Is that natural? Is there a legitimate defense? Is the pure breed thing some anti-darwinian, christian, right-wing thing? Is it faith over fact? Please someone explain this to me even if you hate me for asking. I just don't understand.

Hello everyone. I am hoping to get a female puggle in about a month or two and I was hoping for some advice for those first couple weeks. Can anyone tell me of the supplies I should get before I get the pup? Also, how long did everyone wait before they started to housetrain their puggle. Also, i have heard that they do cry quite a bit and bark and was wondering if there is anything I can do to help limit it? Anything else I need to know to help me hit the ground running?

Hi. I have an 11 week old female Puggle named Padme (my kids love Star Wars).

I live in Missouri, land of Puppy Mill central, but bought Padme' from an older couple, breeders of 40+ years, that breed no other mixed breeds than the puggle - which they say they do because of the positive results of the dog for families. I met the breeders, the parents of many of the puppies, talked to the veterinary nurses they had on site, etc., and thought I was doing a good thing.

In either case, I bought a Puggle knowing nothing about the debate between mixed breeds and pure, nothing about the fact that I was buying a 'fad' dog, (all the purebred puppies the breeder had were also expensive), knew nothing but the fact that I had fallen for this very cute puppy I had visited a couple of times.

I would love to hear some more training tips on this forum. I am having a similar experience to many posters, a puppy who is very friendly, but loves to nip fingers, chews incessantly, is prone to mood swings, etc.

I see lots of posts of symptoms, but it seems that all the experienced owners are simply interested in bashing mixed breeds rather than helping. I am pursuing every bit of information I can into training a good puppy. That's my only concern at this point.

Please, if those Puggle owners who have had success training the 'handfuls' described in the forum would weigh in with what's working, it would be greatly appreciated.

If I have in some way contributed to or supported the puppy mill industry, the promotion of unhealthy breeding, the denegration of animal ownership in any way, I am truly sorry, that was not my intention. What IS my intention now is raising the good family dog I've always wanted for my family.

On that note, I have two young children (7 and 3) who make consistency in training a challenge. My wife and I both work, and although we have a crate Padme sleeps in, typically just keep the crate open and Padme penned into the kitchen with her chew toys. Housetraining and nip-training tips for our situation would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for the forum!

Let’s start of by addressing the issue of whether or not you contributed to the Puppy Mill Phenomenon. The answer is NO. If you bought your Puggle from a breeder of 40+ years I would not suspect they are looking to make a quick profit on unhealthy dogs. It is true that the Puggle has been referred to as a FAD, but there have been many dogs that people thought would disappear and later gained recognition by the AKC as a purebred dog. All it takes is dedicated breeders who will focus on breeding in the good and breeding out all of the bad traits. The second issue you discuss regarding chewing and house training is a common problem amongst all dogs, INCLUDING Purebred. I speak from experience training various mixed and purebred dogs, which all have the same trials and tribulations when it comes to training. The key to raising your Puggle to be a well behaved adult that is more of a joy then a pain is to stay motivated and be sure to put in the time. Puppies will not learn without constant reinforcement. Some tips on training include using treats as positive reinforcement for good behavior and a spray water bottle on the nose to stop nipping. There are no magic tricks to training your puppy. However, if you put in the time and pay attention to your children's behavior around the dog as well. Kids often have a tendency to undo all the hard work and effort you put into training your dog by feeding them table food, allowing it to nip, and various other behaviors that would otherwise be frowned upon.

In conclusion you have purchased a great mixed breed puppy that can with the right training and education of your kids and family become a loyal and trusting pet.

I've had a puggle now for over a month and she is going on 4 months old. So by no means am I an "expert" or anything. This may or may not help, I just want to share what has been working for Bella and I.
First and foremost--Biting! This has been a really annoying habit, especially when visitors come over and want to play with the cute puppy. I understand she is teething, so I try to be patient. The best thing I've found so far is putting a nylabone in the freezer so when she chews on it the cooling sensation soothes her aching gums. Also, for a healthy treat I have frozen apricots or medium sized dried fruit she loves to chew on. It keeps her busy when I'm trying to eat my dinner! Peanut butter in a small Kong will also keep my puggle occupied when I have things to do or need to put her in the kennel. If the nylabone or treats doesn't work, I resort to a squirt bottle with water. She finds the small spray of water annoying, so I feel we are even. Often times, all I have to do is hold the bottle up so she can see it and she stops what she is doing.
Housetraining--requires a lot of patience. The first thing I wanted to do when I spotted an accident was yell at her but everything I read was against that. Now I know why. Whenever I started cleaning it up, she would run over and thought I was playing with her by the scrubbing motions I was making on the carpet. So, after keeping my eye on her for literally every second I have learned her behavior for when she has to go. Continuous sniffing the floor, especially in circles means she is looking for a new location that you will soon be cursing over if you do not lead her outside. After a few days, we would just take her out every hour when we were home even if she didn't give us a sign. This was quite a bother at first in the middle of the night, (she usually went out once at 3am) but if you have someone to take turns with it helps. We live in a condo, and it was important that we make her walk the stairs instead of picking her up and rushing her out the door. She now goes down the stairs and lets us know when its time to go.
Anxiety at night, time to go to sleep!-- My fiance and I both work so it is hard to keep her busy during the day. We have someone let her out midday so she can play and go potty, but this does not even come close to fulfilling her energetic needs. So by the time we come home from work, our relax time has turned into play with Bella time so we can assure a somewhat good night's sleep. We get her toys out and throw her squeaky toys until she gets tired of fetching, which takes forever! I make sure to take food and water away by 8pm. We also go for a 15 minute walk each night right before bedtime so she can get the last bit of neverending energy out and go potty. She gets one last treat, (I throw it in the kennel and close the door behind her when she retrieves it). She didn't like her kennel until I had a day to play with her by it and show her it wasn't a bad place to be. Now she goes in there voluntarily when she's really tired. I draped a dark sheet over the kennel to give her an enclosed, cozy feeling and put a small comfy bed inside. I heat a water bottle for 2 mins each night and wrap it in one of my old worn t-shirts which I put comfortably in the corner of her bed. The warmth reminds her of her mom's body next to her while she sleeps, and the worn t-shirt scent reminds her that she is not alone. I will also rotate the choice of chew toys I put in there if she wakes up bored at 6am so I can at least get a few more minutes of sleep!

PLEASE HELP ME!
I am looking at some 5 week old puggles and I need to know about their color. As of right now they are mainly made up of a whitish/ grey on their backs with the dark grey going down the middle of the back with just a little brown on their head. What I need to know is if that is the color their coat will stay or with time will the color change and turn into that pure golden/brown color that I see on most puggles??????
Please let me know what color everyone's puggle was and if it changed over time. PLEASE

I have a one year old puggle that I adopted from a shelter. She was surrendered because the previous family was not prepared for the big responsibility that she is. She is a wonderful dog and has brought so much love and joy into our lives. I can't imagine loving a creature more than we love her. She is a part of our family.

That's not to say she is an easy keeping dog. She is VERY energetic and needs a LOT of exercise every single day. She craves attention, loves to play and wants to be a part of everything we do. If she is not occupied, she wants to get her mouth on everything. She does bark like a beagle...some may claim the contrary. Each dog is an individual.

It took a while to housetrain her, but with constant postive reinforcement and frequent trips outside she got the point and never has accidents anymore. She is great in her crate and stays in there with her Kong toy while we are at work. She thrives on routine, as does any dog. She knows when to expect her meals, her playtime, her walks and her frequent trips to the dog park. With food motivation and positive reinforcement, she has learned a number of tricks.

I would urge anyone considering a puggle to read as much as they can about them from people who own them and from your veterinarian (not necessarily just a breeder or pet store's claims). They need families who have a lot of patience, time and energy. They are amazing dogs if they get the stimulation, training, playtime and love that they crave. If attention runs short, they tend to "misbehave". They just need constant stimulation.

Toys like Kongs, Buster Cubes and other mind occupying things are great for puggles. SOCIALIZE them well (go to puppy class!). Be patient with them. Give them lots and lots and lots of exercise. And then some more exercise. And then lots of hugs and kisses. Obedience classes are a must if you dont' have experience with dog training (look for a positive reinforcement based program - this works better than punishment).

I'll hold off on my opinion about the breeder debate except to say that there are some great dogs that come out of shelters, and there are some responsible breeders out there (and some "not so responsible" ones). Either way, a dog should be given all the love, attention, health care, and patience that it deserves by the person who takes him or her into their home. Owning any dog is a big responsbility, and it saddens me to see so many dogs shoved aside because people did not consider what a big responsbility they'd be. And now I'll get off my soapbox.

Puggles are great dogs and insanely cute, but please, please be prepared to give them all the time and energy they crave and deserve!

I have 2 puggles. A 3 1/2 month old boy (he's black) and a 11 month old girl (she's fawn). I adore them both! They are the best dogs in the world!!

I had/still have hard time potty training the female in the house but she's great with the crate, the boy is the exact opposite great in the house but will pee and poop in his crate..which is frustrating!

Both have great tempraments and are fantastic pets.

I have a serious problems with my puggle.

First, I cannot train him to eliminate outside. He does it once and awhile, but mostly in the cage. He also eats his own feces, my other dogs feces and urine. I have tried everything, and am unable to break his stubborn breed. Please keep in mind that he does not urinate in the cage, and will tell me when he has to go. However, he never tells me when he has to go outside for number two. He knows that he has done wrong, because he cowers in the cage when I notice that he has been bad. I can't get him on a schedule, and he does not associate that outside is the place to go. I use commands, like "go outside" when I take him out. I then use the command "do your stuff". I have made huge deals when he does what he is supposed to. I have rewarded him with treats when he does what he is supposed to... I am all out of ideas

Secondly, I have been given three options regarding his barking. One cut his vocal cords, two remove him from the premises. I cannot control his barking, I feel like a record player saying no over and over. I am considering a shock collar as an alternative to the invasive surgery that I have been told to make happen

Thirdly, he is reallllllly hyper. Around the family members, he is okay, but when someone comes here- FORGET IT. HE goes nuts. I have been considering medicating him. I have been trying a number of conditioning techniques, but he has not responded to any of them as of yet.

I have been working with him for a year, and have a lot of time invested in him, but I am reaching my breaking point.

It is like he has ADD, he cannot keep his thought process on a single thing. The only time I can have control over him is when he knows he can get a treat or it is feeding time or if he is on a leash. I think that a shock collar would work as a method of consistent reinforcement.

I could use anybodies help.

I have a 3 mth old puggle, who might I add I just adore. He has gained 7 pounds just last month and I was wondering if anyone knows how big male puggles can get. He loves spending 85% of his time on my lap either chewing on something or sleeping so I wanted to know if I should start training him to sit on his pillow next to the couch!? Currently if he is not being held (and we are not on a run) then he gets very upset and cires...should I be worried?!

I purchased a 6 month old puggle less than a week ago. She is very adorable and fun to play with, but has a SERIOUS bathroom problem. I mean, she has poo'ed 3 times from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, poo'ed 3 times inside already, pees on the rug all the time, but she still goes when I take her outside. Maybe I am not training her correctly, but I need some serious help here.

I got a training crate for her, the guy at petco, not someone who worked there, but someone who actually was a dog trainer, said to get a crate that was only big enough for her to get in and turn around in, reason being dogs hate to poo on themselves.

Well, I got the crate, was gone for 2 hours, and of course she pooed on herself. Does anyone have any good suggestions? any advise?

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE TO BUY A PUGGLE? IS IT BETTER TO BUY FROM A PET STORE OR BREEDER? I AM HAVING A HARD TIME FINDING A BREEDER IN THE NY METRO AREA, AND I AM WILLING TO DRIVE. LET ME KNOW ANY IDEAS. THANKS
