WOW!!! that seems high for a shelter dog that needs a home real bad. Sorry but it looks like even the shelters are in it for the money. Maybe if they would drop there prices to under $100 there wouldn't be as many dogs in the shelter. I can understand the cost of altering the dog and S/W but come on... that is a little tooooooooo much.

I don't see it that they are in it for the money. Many programs have had funding slashed in the past few years. They really do rely on donations and other monetary gifts to get by. Think of the number of dogs they are spaying/neutering, s/w, feeding and housing. I'm pretty sure it adds up to a high number.

$350 is a little more than what most rescues charge, but...

Dog is spayed- $150
Has all shots- $100
Housetrained- Thats at least $100 in carpet cleaners/carpet replacement that u are saving.
Also it says the dog is crate trained, a blessing.

If that was the kind of dog I wanted, I would have no problem paying $350 for it.

As you can see most are well under $100 to spay/neuter and as far as shots go... they buy in bulk. Most shots are between $4 and $7 when bought in bulk. So if you spay a dog for $20 and give the dog two shots... one rabies and one DA2PPVL = $14, heartworm meds (depending on the brand and size of dog) $16 to $30. Add up just those charges and you are only looking at maybe $64 now add in a 20 bag of the cheapest dog food and it would still be under $100 per dog. Charge the $100 and get the dog adopted out to a new family quicker. Just my opinion $350 is to much for a shelter dog that needs a home before they are put to sleep because of over crowding.

The rescue organization, I foster for, charges a donation fee of $100-$400. For blood-work, spay/neuter, dental and shots, rescue pays over $400. Many need patella surgeries, between $1200 and $2000. Some need liver shunt, and PDA surgery, this is between 3-$4000. I, as the foster, take care of transportation, grooming, food, toys, bedding, etc.

The donation fee is a 100% tax write off.

The adoption fees are a very small part of the much needed funds, which rescues are so desperate for.

Recues are not desperate to find ANY home for their dogs. The dogs are usually safe with a foster mom, until that perfect home comes along. I may get blasted for this, but the perfect home, is not someone who complains about a small, yes SMALL adoption donation.

DebsDogs... I am not going to blast you. Although you feel you have the right to judge whether or not my home is "PERFECT" for a dog. I was just stating my opinion just as you are allowed to do. I do find that $350 is a high price to pay for a mutt. I understand your desire with the rescues and wanting to find that "PERFECT" home. I am the same way. I just placed my rescued Pom that I have had for the last 10 months into her "PERFECT" home for FREE. I paid for her shots, wormings, heartworm meds, spay and 10 months of high dollar food but I still placed her for free and she was a pure bred Pomeranian. Shame on me for caring for her!!!

Not everyone would have the same rescources as you do Serene. What if you would do that for 100+ dogs? Could you still afford it? I know that I couldn't.

Serene ~ Yep, shame on you for caring so much :)

I think there is a bit of confusion here. I noticed you are talking about shelters, who do buy in bulk, and have vets either "donate" their time, or are considerably less. The Petfinder page, however is Rawehide Rescue. They are not a shelter, so more than likely, pay full price for vet services.

I have a little senior foster. Perfectly healthy, with a $100 donation fee. No one will want her. I adopted my last senior, because I was tired of seeing her on Petfinder for over a year ~ LOL

If I could find the perfect home for my Lulu, I would gladly pay the $100 adoption fee myself.

leo022105... No I couldn't do that for over 100 dogs. I do what I can to make a difference. I had actually rescued 8 Pomeranians at the time. Three sisters (6 mths old) a mother and her four newborn pups. All these babies came from a puppy mill. The miller was getting rid of all her Poms and told me to take as many as I wanted. She had at least 20 but I couldn't take all of them. Although I wanted to. All of the ones I brought back were placed in wonderful homes for free. Angel was the last to leave. She was shy and very timid when I got her. She needed more socialization. She is now a happy, sweet natured, well adjusted and a potty trained dog. :)
I always have seemed to be the one that everyone in the neighborhood comes to when there is a stray, sick or injured animal. Be it cat, dog, bird or rabbit. My home is always open. I will always do the very best I can for them. I may not be perfect but God has given me a strong love when it comes to animals of all shapes and sizes. Sometimes I feel like I am related to Noah. :)

Serene ~

Of those eight Poms, let's say one of the pups needed PDA surgery, in order to save it's life. Now would you pay the $4000 out of your own pocket before adopting it out for free??

Or would you ask for a $300 donation fee for the rest of them, to pay for the life saving surgery of the one?

To be honest with you I am not sure what I would have done in that situation. Luckly I have never had to face more then a broken leg in a dog (which did cost me $1200)but we ended up keeping him until he passed of old age. Wonderful Rott by the way. He had fallen off the back of a pickup truck in front of my mom's house. He was maybe four to five months at the time but the fall shattered his back leg. No one ever claimed him. He was such a great dog with my kids I had to keep him. :)

I have to agree with Deb,
Rescues do have to foot the bills with little discount. In order to even the field, some rescues must raise the prices on all pups to ensure that health bills can be paid (you have to remember also that a lot of rescues will pull pups from animal control shelters where euthanasia is high and end up taking on the risk of not knowing if they have heartworm, worms, mange, etc.)

The organization I volunteer for has pulled dogs an hour before they were going to be euthanized; only to find they had heartworm (common in Miami).
Some rescues, such as ours, have volunteers (Fosters) that take their personal time to help rehabilitate and train the pup, at their expense.

So does the expense deter some buyers from purchasing a pup from the rescue? Yes, however it also keeps away the impulse buyer who only see’s a cute pup face. $350-300 may seem like a lot for a former shelter pup however considering the extensive testing (heart worm, worms), love, and time (training) that were put into these pups and the fact that the donation may be able to fund another pup who may have been euthanized, I feel, really does & should make it worth it.

GEEZE! I don't understand what is with the Puggle fad. I see so many go to shelters or people advertising in the paper to get rid of one. No offense to ANY puggle owners, I love the PUG and BEAGLE. But the mix of the two are kinda ugly. Cute puppies but not very cute full grown. IMO

No offense here. I don't think most grown purebreds are very cute either. I like about 10 breeds or less. The others I'm not too impressed with. Almost all puppies are cute. Some are just cuter than others, and a lot of puggle puppies blow purebreds away on the cuteness scale. Ask the 8 families that just picked up theirs this weekend.

I like him a lot better than I like most people. To you he's a dog. TO me he's an adopted son who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly. I have no problem with any of these. <
