Elie and Digger are bad little dogs. I have a small flock of chickens in my backyard. They have a large fenced in run. Im used to Elie and Digger trying to dog under the fence but they never get in because im there to stop them. Well i had a hen sitting on 13 eggs and she finally hatched out 11 of the 13. I was excited because i have some new silkie babies. Anyways one of the new chicks crawled through the fence and Elie and Digger pounced on it. Before i could tell them to drop it they had ripped it in half! I learned my lesson and im fixing the run tomorow. I just had to tell someone. It got me kinda depressed.
That is really sad. I guess you need to buy some type of mesh fencing to put inside the run to keep them babies in. Heidi killed a baby bird one time in front of my daughter when she was only 3 years old. She came running in the house screaming "call 991" I thought something had happened to my bf with the way she was screaming and crying.
Aww Digger :o( The nature of the beast is upsetting sometimes..hope you get it fixed soon, so they don't have any more accidents. I'm sure as soon as they did it and you yelled for them to drop it...they probably knew that they did something really bad.

oh, i'm sorry digger, that sucks, for lack of a better word. my big dog did that exact same thing with a teeny tiny chick, and i was sooo disappointed in him. but DGI is right(as usual, tee hee), sometimes they act like animals, darn it. don't be hard on yourself, accidents happen. just get it all fixed up and you'll all be fine. =)
Yeah. Im going to line the bottom of the run with a double layer of chicken wire, They new they did wrong. I hollered at them to drop it and the tails went between thier legs and they crawled across the yard and whimperd at my feet. I couldnt be to mad at them. They are just puppies and they are following thier instincts. I should have see it coming though. Oh well. I still have 10 more chicks and more on the way.
I should add that they are both back to themselves. After they sat in thier kennels for an hour (thier choice) they are playing with thier toys again. They are back to acting normal and they have totally forgotten about the chick.
No your doggies aren't murderers they were just protecting their territory. A few times our chicks have gotten into the big pasture, it is fenced plus an electric fence that is used during the day. Our dogs immediately proceed to wool them to death unless I spot them and tell them no. I once had my Great Pyr put a Guinea in her mouth and proceed to go to the pound and jump in with Guinea still in his mouth and than he just dropped her in the water. Guess he wanted company swimming, I was with them, our dogs never free range.
When our dogs are out of their area and if they do chase a chicken or duck they get quite a lecture from me and put back in their pen which has access to their day pasture and a night pasture. The pen is 1/3 of the barn shared by goats and sheep.
I did digress sorry, but please don't be too hard on your doggies they were just doing what is natural and protecting their area. Just think it could have been a coyote in there and they would have given it the what for.
One other thought is there on top on their run because the chickens will fly in.

Elie and Digger dont have a run. I have a large fenced in back yard. Within that there is a fenced in run for the chickens. They have a plastic mesh on top to keep them in. The baby chick squeezed out between the wires in the run and was hanging out in the rest of the yard when they got him. Even though they irritate me sometimes and do stupid stupid things i cant stay mad at them for to long.
Sorry Digger, I am an old lady and I completely misread about the pen situation. It is the chickens you have in the separate area. We have a couple of Silkies and I just love petting them their feathers are like their name silk.
I know you asked Digger and I hope I am not being rude by answering. Chickens and ducks usually will and can eat anything. It does not change the quality of the eggs or get the chickens/ducks sick. In fact many a time I have seen the chickens hunt down a field mouse. They free range during the day, at night they are locked up in their chicken quarters because of coyotes and bobcats.
The only think I have found they will not eat are my baked beans hmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!
The silkies are cool. I got them because they make good brood hens. And they look neat. I have never given my chickens any kind of meat. It just seems kinda wierd. Elie and Digger love to chase things. Bugs, mice, the cats, me. Basically anything that moves they will stalk. I dont think they have ever actually caught anything until they got the chick.
Oh, so sorry to hear about poor chicky! My sheltie, Happy, when I was a kid, got my pet chicken- it was horrible. I don't think she meant to do anything bad, she just wanted to play but the chicky was too fragile.
Hmm, never fed mine taco meat. I have seen birdseed treated with red pepper to keep squirrels out of it, it claims the birdies can't taste it at all.
Sorry about the chick, hope you got the fence fixed. Those chicks can slip out of the SMALLEST holes! It can be really hard to keep them corralled.
