Oh, O.K. Since Jessica doesn't think we need any more "new" breeds, I guess we don't. Calling all breeders who are breeding new breeds...will you please stop! Jessie girl and her chiefs do not like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW....I love how adult you are. And i love being called jessie girl....very witty! *clap* *clap*.....And yes that is my opinion. If i may ask...why do you think we need more breeds? If that is the case, why have a breed standard at all? Lets just quit spaying and neutering our dogs. Let nature take its course. Think of all the fun breeds we'll have!!! Too bad my dogs are both boys, I could breed them together and make a French Basset, or a Bulldog Hound!!! That would be awesome! (yes..that was all scarcastic)
The problem isn't that we don't need any new breeds, we have the wrong people with the money intentions trying to do it. FOR THE MONEY-not for the breed. I am sure there are great breeders out there trying to create a new breed for a new breed, not the money. But I guarantee that most people who want a designer dog are not going to pay the price that these good breeders are asking. It takes a great deal of money and time and testing. If you are going to buy a designer puppy, ask the breeder if they've done testing and are working with a genetics expert or even a vet to create a breed. If not, don't buy it! Think about this, if you are buying a designer dog, you have absolutely no guarantee of the parents. SO if you are looking for a wonderfully tempermented puppy, you may have been told that Lassie was the mom and Cujo was! The litter may have multiple sires if they run all of their dogs together for convience. There is no DNA testing and no accountability held. Sure they can produce mixed breed registry papers-but that does nothing, you can print something just as pretty on your computer.
"Alot of people hve come on lately looking for these mutts and its getting very annoying. They could easily google instead of coming on here time and time again to bug us!"
As a new member and owner of two (gasp) labradoodles (i'm sorry lab/poodle mixes) I'm feeling somewhat unwelcome! I understand your arguments and feelings on the issue, but there is no need to be so nasty towards these "mutts" or their owners! There is a reason these dogs are gaining in popularity--they are GREAT dogs! I loved my first one so much I got another one! I'll try not to "bug" you guys too much with any issues about them though!
megbrink, it's been said a thousand times here, and I guess I will say it again. It's not the dogs anyone has a problem with, it's the breeders. I have a "puggle" and Im not afraid to post here, you shouldnt be either. And please, do not feel unwelcome. When people are debating mixed breeds it's not the dogs...it's the people who breed them. Please do not feel like your dog is being bashed.
I understand that the people here are criticizing the breeders, but you all make it seem like the dogs and the people who buy the dogs. A puppy is a puppy whether its purebred or not. It seems like everyone is talking in terms of "black and white". If something so small as a puppy can change a persons life, who cares?
Exactly! While some of you are clear that it is the breeders that you are angry about, comments such as "stop bugging us" and other rude comments throughout this thread and the entire discussion board are insulting to the dogs and to the owners. Like I said in my earlier post, i do see the other side of the argument--i just love the lab/poodle mix and i will continue to get them. As with ANY dog I will always look to shelters first though! I don't understand why you people posting petfinder links don't think that EVERYONE should adopt. Why is it ok to pay thousands for a purebred Pug or Basset hound or some other breed with LOTS of health problems? Isn't the concept of breeding ANY dog detrimental to the overpopulation problem? Seems like an elitist double standard to me!
I know this has been said over and over, but if not for breeders who carefully refine each breed, there would be no purebreeds to create your lab/poodle mix. Dogs would become homogenous and the beauty and individuality of each breed would disappear. As for the money, testing is costly. To breed a dog without genetic defects costs money that is passed on the the buyer. If I'm not prepared to pay for that, then I go to the shelter..
You're right, saying things like "stop bugging us" is rude. I'm not trying to defend whoever said that, but people sign onto this forum every single day asking "where can I find a _______<~insert mixed breed". Seriously, after a while you feel like a broken record...repeating the same thing, over and over. But, still that doesn't give anyone the right to be outright rude to someone else.
There is a difference between good breeders and bad breeders. Good breeders test their dogs before they breed them. Have their hips X-rayed, eyes tested, etc. This is so they know they will not be passing genetic diseases down to the litter. Bad breeders do not do this, because they don't care. They are in it for the money. Good breeders have waiting lists for their puppies (not all do, though) and they carefully inspect the person or family that their puppy is going to. Bad breeders don't care where the puppy ends up, as long as (s)he is paid.
The reason people say not to buy from "bad" breeders is because giving them your money is encouraging them to continue to irresponsibly breed. I understand that it's not the puppy's fault, and they still deserve good homes, but buying them only encourages these bybs.
Well said Aceyfacey2! Thank you! As I stated in the very first place, "Just remember the puppies at the millers & BYB's still have parents that live in the horrid conditions to breed more every cycle to pump out more puppies for profit without concern for the health or well being of the pups or parents". Buy buying from these breeders you are contributing to the continued suffering of the puppies parents that are expected to churn out puppies every single time the female goes in heat. Kept in horrible filthy conditions. That IS our big issue in trying to simply educate everyone. Yes you may save an ill puppy but what about the parents of the puppies???? Is that ok for them to live their whole life in a wire cage, not knowing what grass feels like, or the kind touch of a human, or even what a toy is? Please think about the whole picture before you feel that you are personally being jumped on! Thanks!
I just read along and said nothing but I just cannot stop myself so here goes.... I agree 100% that the idea of these designer breeds is the absolute stupidest thing I have ever heard of. I mean OMG think about it people. Like a lab has never before mated with a poodle? Or a cocker with a poodle? Hello have all these people forgotten the term mix Breed? Used to be we had a hard time finding homes for the so called mutt and the shelters were destroying them as fast as they were coming in because they were just over run. Now all of a sudden the mutt is a new fashion statement? How stupid is that? So whats next the shelters are going to empty out and the pure bred dogs are going to end up the ones thrown away because they are out of style? I am sorry but nothing burns my butt more then to hear someone ask about a mutt when the pounds are over run with them. And they ask with the full intent of paying out their ears for the dog too.
Tell you all what, you want a mutt more power to you infact I encourage you getting one after all we have so many. BUT since those of you who are looking for one of these dogs are willing to pay up to $3500.00 for one, go to the darn pound and find you one for $85.00 and then donate the other $3415.00 to that shelter so they can help your new dogs friends stay alive since you have the money to just throw around. I really do not care if anyone gets mad at me for saying it either. I just found out there are 65 pits in one shelter in NY that are probably all going to die because some fool would rather stereotype them or better yet get a designer mutt. And that is just one example. They are destroying thousands of dogs every day in this country if you all hurry you just might find the mutt your looking for.
Geeze these shelters really don't know it but they have been struggling to save the lives of dogs who are actually worth more then the buildings that house them. Me personally I would rather see them all put to sleep then to go to the home of a superficial fad chaser that will no doubt dump them off at a pound anyway when the trend dies down or changes.
Sorry if this reply seems harsh but I am tired of seeing animals die often in the most inhumane ways because of fad chasers or people who simply do not understand the concept of patients and training and think the animal should just automatically know that it is supposed to poop outside and the couch is not a chew toy. These dogs are not a new style of purse or a fancy new hairdo they are living breathing animals that did not ask to be born and certainly do not appreciate being treated like a pair of shoes either. Someone has to say what they can only express with their eyes as they are waiting to be destroyed, and I just did.

ITs a little difficult not to feel "personally jumped on" with rude comments such as the above.... And I am the one who needs to see the whole picture????
Are you insinuating that I don't see the whole picture? Take a ride to the nearest animal controll office and see these animals destroyed! ( out of ten shelters still use decompression chambers on these mutts people now call "designer breeds." If you feel personally jumpped on then you must be getting a case of guilty concience. I have a japanese chin / min- pin mix I guess she is a "chin-pin." Gee and to think I never knew my beautiful pound puppy was worth a mint! Sorry you feel insulted by the cold hard truth but sometimes the truth is a bitter pill to swollow. All it takes is one time to watch them as they destroy these dogs and you'll think differently.
Oh BTW I once had a beautiful shephard and rot mix I never knew my designer "shot" could be worth so much more then any other dog.

Could you be any more presumptuous? I dont need to take a look at the nearest animal shelter. I've adopted five dogs (including one of my DESIGNER mutts) and also volunteer. I am well aware of the "truth" and CERTAINLY don't need a condescending lecture. You should really learn a little bit more about the people you are insulting before you hurl insults left and right.
For the record, NOT that it matters, but in my area there are VERY rarely any "designer mutts" available at shelters. I found my Koda by CHANCE and there were about 20 inquiries for her the first day she was posted! I'm not saying they are not out there, but where I live its not designer mutts that are in need of homes, its the pits and the rottys etc.... My point is that speaking from experience, it is NOT easy to find a lab or golden poddle mix in a shelter.
Anyway, my initial post dealt NOT with the issue of crossing breeds--it dealt with the rudeness of people on these threads. Many people responded nicely and emphasized that it was the breeders they were angry about and I can totally respect that. However, telling owners of these "mutts" to stop coming on the boards, or hurling insults at them, and making ignorant assumptions as YOU have is what my issue is. And yes, I WAS insinuating that you don't see the whole picture. If you did, you wouldn't be so condescending and presumptuous!
a decompression chamber does not have to kill. a decompression chamber is used to bring nitrogen levels down and oxygen levels up in the body after being exposed to enormous amounts of pressure and then lifitng of the pressure to quickly. this is commonly seen in divers. a condition called "the bends".
"For the record, NOT that it matters, but in my area there are VERY rarely any "designer mutts" available at shelters."
So are you saying that there are absolutly no mxs breeds in the shelters near you? Because that is what these so called designer dogs are. They are mix breeds BKA Mutts. And let me tell you no one believes for a second that there is a shelter anywhere without a mix breed. Believe me I see the whole picture. People that get these dogs that are so called designer dogs are only encouraging the spread of an already major problem. Money hungry people and animals with no homes. If it is a mix breed that people now want then the shelters are I guarentee you full to the rim with them. I did not say YOU I said people WHO. If you are not one of those people then don't worry but generally people do not get offended if they ar not the ones doing it. You just don't seem to get it there is no such thing as a designer dog they are mix breeds period. And if you are so involved I cannot for the life of me understand why you are not upset by this whole concept.
It is a little difficult to sit and pet and love and play with a dog that you know is going to die in a few days. But we do it because quite possibly the love they get from us is all they have had their entire lives. And you just pray as the ten days turn into a few hours that somehow the dog will get a repreve. A stay of execution. And you know something it is hard not to wonder what it would be like to get ahold of the idiot breeder that created this dog in the first place knowing the population problem we have. But I guess that it shouldn't matter that there are thousands of these designer dogs available because after all they were not cross bred on purpose and given a catchy name. So in the end it is really hard to be polite and understanding when someone jsut doesn't get it simply because they refuse. You think the harsh reactions on this board were in need of repremanding? They were not unsolicited nor unjustified. Not a one of them.
