Mini Schnauzer, shih-tzu, maltese, bichon, chihuahua, miniature pinscher........first I should ask what else are you looking for in a dog?? Besides a lap dog, what hours do you work, do you want to have to groom the dog, shedding or low-shedding, puppy or no.......
Welllllllll- do you like long hair or short? Friendly to everybody or just likes you and other members of your household? Active or sedentary? Amount of grooming necessary- are you willing to learn to trim a dog yourself or pay to have it done- for breeds like a poodle- or would you prefer a breed that had a certain hair length that you just brush?
Just because one breed of small dogs is perfect for Jane Doe does not mean it is right for you. You have to give people more to go on. Have you tried some of the breed selector computer quiz things? That is one way to narrow it down.
Okay, I guess that was pretty broad about the lap dog. We already hava a cat and a four year old white german shepard/chow mix that we rescued from the pound. The cat is my daughter's and the dog is my husband's. I have always just wanted a dog of my own. I would rather have a non-shedder, since the dog we have sheds all over. I do work, but both my husband and I work across the street so we are flexible with coming back and forth. I've always wanted something the same size as Toto in the Wizard of Oz. How is that???
Since you have a larger dog already I wouldn't go with a dog so small that it'd be fragile. Like a chihuahua or a pom, they are fragile & could easily be hurt (accidental or not) from a larger dog. Get a sturdier lap dog, like a pug. :)
I agree with the above one, too. A maltese etc. Also, I would try a pom. There cute, furry and a great small lap dog!! But make sure that you do your research. You don't want a dog that won't fit into your life style!!!!!
You should get a Labradoodle. Their small and fluffy and they can sit in your lap. Plus it can stand up to bigger dogs. They even wont bug your cat their too nice to do that. Oh yeah to those you are wondering who i am i forgot my username for my other account so i made a new one. plus i got a diffrent dog cuz the other one just wasnt for me. and i lost my other cat. so i only have a cat a dog and a fish.
kitties rule labradoodles are not small. every one i have seen is as big as a lab. maybe you meant cockapoo ? they are on the smaller size like a cicker spaniel but still not small enough to be a lap dog.
op - sorry i am not a lap dog person. i have only bigger dogs. but if i were to get a small breed it would be a chihuahua or that hairless pug from the other thread.
I have a Chow mix and a mini American Eskimo. My Eskie is on my lap alot, but I bet you'd want something alot calmer. I guess my point I meant to make is that you CAN have a large dog and a small dog together. My Chow is great with small dogs. I bet your white German Shepherd/Chow mix is beautiful. Got any pics? I had a white German Shepherd/husky mix but she was dog aggressive and we had to take her to a rescue. I'd suggest a min pin or a chihuahua. My mom has had both and they LOVE to sit in your lap for hours.
I've never owned one of these personally, but I think a Bichon Frise would be a good breed. Only because I have a friend who works a lot and has another dog..her house is always hair free and Charlie is so funny when he jumps on you, you don't even feel it! I'm so used to my girls jumping on me and having to jerk away from the weight, but he is light as a feather, playful, sweet, doesn't really shed and great lap dogs.
I have chi's and a bichon...love them all! It all depends on whether you want to take your dog to the groomer or not. My chi's will sit with you all day long and just let you stroke them...but then again my bichon does too! My chi's shed, my bichon does not. My chi's can get a little rambunctious (on very rare occasions...lol) and so can my bichon (white fluff ball running like the dickens...too cute!). It's a toss up! As long as you get a chi that's a little larger (5-6lbs range) they are sturdier than you think. No major rough housing, but they wouldn't let you do that any how with them, but not bad. I have 3 girls and no one has ever gotten hurt. My bichon is an absolute joy to watch. Her beautiful white coat and big black, round eyes...oh you just melt. Nope can't pick between them. I hope you can make your decision with all of these great recommendations!
i have a cavalier king charles spaniel puppy and she is the best! I will probably stick with this breed for life.....I am hooked! I must warn you that they do come with a hefty price tag though! Usually about $2000.00. You can get them at a pet store cheaper but I would not recommend that......make sure you find a reputable breeder.
