My puppy is about 3.5 months old. About a month ago, we noticed hair loss near the folds of his ears (they're droopy, folded ears). The vet gave us a medication (antibiotic) to clear up an assumed bacterial infection. Well the hair started to grow back, but now again, the same hair loss is occurring, except now, we're also noticing hair loss under his arms, legs and his chest is also thinning. We are quite concerned since we're both new pet owners and are wondering if this is normal or seasonal shedding. My puppy is half chihuahua and half toy poodle.
There a alot of skin conditions that cause hair loss try a food with melitonen(i know thats spelled wrong)millenium solid gold is a great food but I think the melitonen is only in there soft food if you mix the hard with the soft it be good and it is also a great food no bi product or corn.
Well my little Whatever, which the wonderful folks here think may be a Chi/Papillion mix had a few bald spots when we got her. Took her to the Vet and he gave us ChlorhexiDerm Shampoo, after he checked her for infections and mites...took scrapings. Anyway she kept getting balder and balder until a few days ago and lo and behold her hair is growing back. We think it may have been an allergy to fleas. I am afraid to put Frontline on her because of her weight so I do check for fleas, haven't found any in awhile. I have to shampoo her once a week and leave the shampoo on for at least ten minutes, after which I blow dry her very carefully.
Forgot to mention she was four months old February 5th. Also has gained 4 ounces, she is no 1 3/4lbs. YEAH!!!!
I posted about a simular subject a few days ago if you would like to go back and look at that, called Doggie Bald Spot about my Boston Terrier's simular problem. I have since got a medication for dogs at the store called Sulfadene or something simular that is for Hotspots and hairloss, seems to be helping but it is a bit early to tell, you can get it at Wal-Mart.
What are you feeding your puppy? I had the same problem with my puppy and it was due to giving her food that was insufficent for puppies. You can see my post about this under the topic "Natural Balance". Make sure you are feeding food that is specifically for puppies. Hope this helps.
