I just got a new puppy 2 weeks ago. He is a pomeranian and about 8-9 weeks old. I already have a jack russell/rat terrier mix that lives with us. He is about 13 years old and has never lived with another dog before. Needless to say, he is not adapting well to the new puppy. Our pom will try to approach our older dog and the older dog just growls or quickly gets away from him. I understand that it will take a while for Brandy (the older dog) to get used to the puppy, but I was just wondering if there was anything me and my family could do to help the process. I would greatly appreciate any help or advice anyone could give me.
Let him do it in his own time and know that it may take forever.
13 is quite old for a dog to have to get used to a vibrant, hyperactive puppy. Don't let the puppy bother him, and he will adjust to him easier. Let him growl and move away, that tells the puppy that his antics are not aprpecaited or tolerated and teaches him manners.
Make sure that you still pay him gushes of attetnion, and pay attetnion to him before the puppy or he may become resentful.
