I watched just part of the Toy section last night. Yeah for that cute little POM!!!! He took 2nd. I was wondering about the Pek. who took 1st. Isn't all that hair absolutely uncomfortable and hard for him to walk? He was waddling! Do they cut it after the show? It seems sort of cruel to me to make that poor dog have all that really heavy hair. The Pek took 1st, the Pom-2nd, the Poodle-3rd and the AffenPincher (sp?)-4th. It's good to be a Toy dog whose breed name begins with the letter P, isn't it? One more question....is it a requirement to wear NUN shoes for the handlers? LOL!!!!!
LMAO! Cricket, that was ALL I could think while watching. I mean, they must be able to come up with something a little more attractive. For goodness sakes, women dance in high heels, you think they could do a short little jog in something with a small heel!!!! I guess I am a girly girl!!!! But it's not like they are walking for 10 miles or anything. Hee Hee!!

wow i didn't even notice the shoes. i'll have to look at them tonight. i was rooting for the pug, at least he was in the top 7 or 8 in the toys. yeah that peke hair is something. i don't know how a judge can judge a dog with that much hair. he was so funny waddling along. i actually recognized some of the dogs from other shows- coleman, coco, jeffrey the peke.
Pearl, Do you know why they keep so much hair on the poor Pek? Poor little baby. It was so funny after watching that show, and all those handlers who kept brushing their already perfectly groomed dogs, I looked at Toby (whom I had just touched up his professional grooming job myself in a few places) and screamed AAACCCKKKKKK!!!!! What have I done!!!! Funny, he looked fine to me before hand. LMAO!!!
I was watching the peke too. The announcer said that they dont waddle they roll.
Often in one of our classes someone will come up to me and said they never liked the look of schnauzers before Kiba because they didnt like the full beard and legs and all that... I dont think most people realize that the dogs they see on the shows are in show cuts... Also the cropped ears and tails of some dogs.

The fur on a peke in full coat is very soft and fluffy, it really is a lot of air. No, they never shave the coats on show pekes or any other fluffy coated breed. Why? Because it totally ruins the coat, any long coated dog (outside poodles and bichons and other breeds that are typically shaved and groomed down) that has had their coat shaved can never be shown again. Once a coat like that is cut down, it *never* grows in the same again, it looses the proper texture for some reason and believe me, a judge would notice it. . Personally I think Pekes look like furry bugs, but that's just me. I think I read somewhere that JEffrey the Peke is an import from Great Britain but don't quote me on that. I may have him confused with Les.
well, dogfather, you certainly explained the peke well. but you did not address the shoes! actually, i good friend of mine wears those when she bartends. she says they are sooo comfortable. thank god she's behind the bar all night, cuz if someone took a gander at those things, she wouldn't be getting her tip, lol!
I had to add, I have a friend in our kennel club who has a bearded collie, Darby, who she was doing dog shows with. She had to leave town for an emergency trip, and ended up having to board Darby. She told the kennel to brush him out, and to watch for mats, but to be careful about cutting them out because he was a show dog and his coat can't be clipped..
When she came back, they brought Darby out. Completely shaved. His coat was ruined. She can't show him any more, as his coat grew back in, it was kinda wooly in feeling, not long and silky like it'd been. he looks like a raggedy wolf now.
Ohh! I forgot to address the shoes matter. At dog shows, handlers do not wear what looks the best.. but what is the most comfortable. Some of those shoes are ugly as sin, but for us, like a worn in pair of sneakers. they're perfect for people who are going to be running around the show ring and need practicality and comfort. Often many handlers show a few differnt dogs at dog shows, and because they have to stand up and groom their dogs, they may be on their feet for hours and hours. Uncomfortable shoes are bad, I speak from personal experience =P
Minniyar, haven't you ever heard of suffering for fashion? LOL! that is absolutely terrible what happened to your friend's collie. what a shame! was she able to get some sort of compensation for their dastardly deed? i would be heartbroke! you see, this is why i own mutts; so i never have to wear nun shoes or worry about grooming disasters!
