I'm getting a Chi and some friends have told me that I can literbox train her because she is so small. Is that possible? I do live on the third floor of an apt. building and training her to go outside during the cold months is going to present interesting challenges....but I don't know about literbox training.
Also, I have a balcony, do you think I could train her to use a puppy pad out there instead of rushing her down three flights of stairs when I catch her in the act??
Last question....if I use a puppy pad or literbox indoors, will she ever go or want to go outdoors?? Any feedback would be appreciated.... Thanks.
I'm on the 6th floor of an apt. building, and have a cocker spaniel puppy. I have 2 potty pads in a large rubbermaid under the bed storage container. We have it by our balcony door, and she reliably goes in it, and if we are outside and tell her to go potty, she goes outside on the grass instead.
I wanted to put it on the balcony when she was reliably trained, but it's easier in the corner of the living room, she goes on her own without having to ask to go out, and it is easier to keep an eye on how dirty the pads are to keep them clean.
Also, when your dog is older, if you let her roam your apt. during the day, she can go in her potty box when she needs to, especially if you work all day.
I suggest a box with either recycled newsprint dog litter or potty pads in it over just a potty pad beacuse it pretty much guarantees the mess will be in the box instead of the dog being on the pad, and her bum over the floor from circling and squating. We cleaned up a good number of messes that weren't really her fault... she was where we wanted her to potty...

in your situation i would litter train the puppy also. i think even if i wasnt i would still train a chi to use a litter pan. not sure exactly how to go about training that way but i think acey has trained her chihuahua to use a litterbox so she could help you out with that part. good luck .
Thanks guys. That is exciting news. I just really want my chi to go in the box and outside. Thanks so much for the info. If anyone talks to Acey...let her know that Im interested in talking to her about how she trained her chi. Also if Acey you get this feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org since the chat thing is still broken.
