I have a golden retreiver who is nine years old. He has been vaccinated every year up until recently when I found out about how we are overvaccinating our pets. He only gets a rabies every three year because it is mandatory by law, but does he need the DHLPP as well every year? I think he has had enough vaccinations to last a lifetime. What do you think a vaccination schedule for an older dog should be?
i usually have only vaccinated my animals both dog and cat for the first three years of their life and then did titers on them each year after that. the dogs titers have remained strong even though it has been 3 years since their last shots. the cats are strictly indoor so their exposure is low ao i just keep them up to date on rabies because it is law. i have always done this even before the questions started about over vaccinating. my sisters cat died last month from a vaccine induced fibro sarcoma. he was nine yrs. old and was vaccinated every year even though he was strictly indoors. weigh the risks due to your animals exposure level ie dog shows, dog parks etc. and make your decision on that.
Hello, Nine years old is a senior. Just follow the vet's vaccination schedule. You should be fine. Go with whatever your vet says, as there are different vaccination requirements depending on where you live. Don't just assume, it is better to be safe than sorry. Whatever your vet says, go with it. I think it also has something to do with the area you live in. I lived in Montana, there were no heartworms, fleas -- I moved to the south and my new vet said heartworm, Parvo and Rabies are all very common here - he sees them all often. If you live in a colder state...and your dog is 9 years...I would not think it would be much of a worry.
I've never seen a dog that was older catch a disease because he wasn't Vaccinated after so many years. Stop Vaccinating, he'll be fine. I stopped my guys 3 years ago, They've been great. BUT...If you need to board your pet at a Hospital or Kennel they will probly refuse the dog. If your dog becomes ill with some other serious illnes then you may want to revaccinate (when they are better) Being ill may screw up their immune system and the need to reimmunize.
