I'm looking for a dog with a proper temperment to be a family dog. I know
show dogs may be bred for a little different temperment than what I'm
looking for. He is saying this because of all the trouble we have with Lexie, we've been told by some that she was bred for that extra spark you need in the ring which we have found out is way too much for us. A show dog may be more high energy, which is what you may want
in the ring but not necessarily as a pet. We both feel that Lexie is great in the show ring
because of her energy, but she is a little high strung for strictly a family pet. Do you find this to be true in some instances? I really do think we need to sell her. The stress is just too much.

All my show-dog bred guys are fine pets. I think that the problem you have in Lexi is that she has a working-stockdog temperament. Lots of the herding breeds have tons of drive. That is what makes Border Collies and Aussies so good at agility and flyball. Think how much energy it would take to chase COWS around ALL DAY LONG. Tons!!!!! That is the original work of the Aussie; cow chasing.

Chi are supposed to have a terrier like temperment. They are supposed to be a fiesty breed, not shy. In general the breeder should be able to tell you which of the pups is mid attitude in the group, this is what you are looking for.

Chi are not supposed to be shy, meek, or withdrawn.

However, its easier to deal with a fiesty 4 pound dog then a fourty pound one. Chuckle.

But yes, we do breed for dogs with a confident attitude. Basicly, you need to find a breeder that understands the bascis of temperments and can tell you which of the pups is not alpha.

Also, read up on temperment testing puppies, and make sure you seperate the litter mates from each other. Put them on the floor and see if they are exploring and how reserved they are or are not. A shy puppy will cringe and shiver, a mid puppy will be curious but not bold. A bold puppy will not care that it is in a new enviorment and move at full speed.

Well, maybe hers is extremely high. She is not from working dog lines though, all her lines are strictly show lines. I had a border collie from working stock, her father was a 10-time sheep herding champion from Scottland. She was high energy and so is Chloe but Lexie, is like out of control. She has no respect for us even though I have worked with her extensively. Like today, I brought her with me to take my son to preschool, cuz I was taking her to the vet right after to be groomed and her her bordatella. I got out of the car and went to open the backseat door and Lexie is standing on my son's lap! None of my other dogs would do that. She is just so pushy and very much lacking in self control. She is a terrible barker. She barks every time we come home. She spins in her crate and high-pitch barks and paws at it while all of my other dogs have always sat quietly, even my border collies. I use a shock collar on her and she yelps in pain and stops but then she'll do it again 10 seconds later. I don't get it.

Ln- I just went to the link on the pictures thread and Chloe is absolutely gorgeous! Lexi is pretty too, but I like Chloe best!

Part of your trouble winning with Chloe may be that she is a tri. In Shelties it is much easier to win with a sable and white or a blue merle, tris and blacks just don't win as often since they aren't as flashy- not that they can't or don't win, but it is a little harder. That may extend into Aussies as well.

That's right, I forgot about that. My breeder had mentioned that to me a couple years ago. Maybe that is another reason Lexie wins, she is a blue merle.

Yep, that is all stockdog type traits. Pushy, pushy, pushy- think, they have to convince biggo cows and bulls to move around- it takes a hard dog. Shelties and BC's are mostly sheepdogs (sheep move a little easier for the most part), but there are a few BC's that can move cattle as well. You can get these traits in show lines, just as you can breed two champion pomeranians and get a 17 lb monster even though the parents are each 3 or 4 lbs. It is just what genes you happen to get.

I've been thinking about this a lot. I figured out what it is that is bothering me about Lexie. She has no respect for me or my family. Chloe will look to me first for a command, like when I open the door to outside, I've trained them both to wait. Chloe obeys and looks to me to whether or not I am going to say okay. Lexie doen't care, she'll just barge through, I always have to tell her to wait, whereas Chloe has learned this and I don't have to remind her. That is just a small example of what the problem is. Maybe I like a more submissive dog? Maybe Lexie is not as submissive in termperament? I don't know but I wish somebody could understand what I'm talking about.

Ln, I understand. I re-homed a pomeranian because of this same problem. She didn't care what I said. If she ever slipped out the front door, she ran away and you could stand there and call her, "Penny, Penny, Come!" It didn't matter if you had a whole T-bone steak in your hand, she just didn't give a darn. Once she got far enough away, she would turn around, give you the finger, laugh, and then keep on running! (Ok, figuratively speaking, but I swear that is what she did- MADDENING!!!) It really steamed me because I attributed it to her not loving me enough to care, so I got very mad at her, which did not help the situation. In the end it was best to put her in another situation.

You want a more biddable dog. Maybe not more submissive, but more biddable- that means that the dog WANTS to do what YOU want the dog to do, not that the dog is just going to do what the dog wants to do and you can just go to *ahem*.

I think it is fine if you re-home your dog. She is no fun, which really isn't fun for her either. Sometimes it isn't your failure or her failure; you just don't match. She might be happier in another setting. There is no guilt in that, and I don't blame you for wanting to find another home for her.

I could really go on and on about this, too! I really truely understand. Hope this helps.

Ln, it sounds like Lexie just has a temperment that you can not control. Somebody else who shows may be more than interested in her, so I would look in that direction if selling her. Someone else might as well have a chance to finish her.
Pups from the same litter can have extremely different temperaments. It's born into them and you can't change it. You just have to learn to control it. She definitely sounds like she has a lot more energy than what you are willing to put up with and I wish you the best in your decision.

Having a dominent, independent, thinking dog is a very hard task. We want dogs to be our biding loving companions, and when they think, it gets harder. Sometimes, the eternal fight becomes to much. I still do not think there is anything wrong with placing her. As someone who has a dog that drives them crazy for similar reasons, I think its the right thing. My problem dog however is a rottie, and they are much harder to place in good homes.
