Just curious. I'm not a pit fancier or hater, kind of neutral, but I noticed there seems to be a huge amount of pits in shelters. Anybody have a theory why this dog is so overbred? I know the fighting thing ocurs in some parts but it seems there are just thousands of pits needing homes, more than any other breed and I was wondering if anybody has a theory as to why. Are they less adoptable because of their reputation? or are there just more of them?
Where I live we have an accociation they make the rules about dogs, swing sets and pools ect. I have seen alot of dogs we are not allowed to have then they have to get rid of them or move most people get rid of the animal I had to download everything about the neo mastiff and bring it in for approval that way they cant tell me to get of her some people dont think they see the pit bull that is grandfathered in and hey they have one why cant I it does not work that way.Its sad if you think about it
one major reason is that pitts are cheap.. that is why every thug and their mama have one or two. Now if you raise the rate on pitts let say $500 or so.. then that would limit on the amount that people want to buy. Its all about supply and demand... here in my neighbor hood, almost half the homes here have pitts because just about anyone with a $50-$100 can get one. Like buying a ford in texas.. everyone can get a ford escort... but if you raise the price then people would think twice about getting these dogs and then letting it go. That is why you don't see yorkies in shelters, well not much as they are prized and valued pets.
In years past, I saw a few pits, or what humane societies classed as pits whether they were amstaffs or staffs, etc. Then when the talk of bill 132 to ban pits in ontario came up, people started to dump their animals at the shelter. In December when we started to think about getting a dog I checked 12 humane society websites for near me, and they each had easily 6 pages of dogs, about 10 dogs per page, and you were lucky to find 5 dogs in total that didn't have the description 'pit mix'.
While they are beautiful and sweet, I just can't afford the insurance that owning one would entail when bill 132 passes, and no matter how outspoken people are, I find it likely it will pass sadly. If it does, the shelters around here are going to be kinda empty for a while. :(

***Alot of people down south think its a thug accessory****"heatherom"
That has to be the dumbest statement/comment by anyone... might i add unnecessary. you have (as you called it) thuggish people everywhere, Just look around. I am from "Down South" so i am stating FACTS... There is a "Thug" that is starting a rescue group for pits....

Another eason why there are so many is that they are confiscated alot of the time. They busted a fighting ring near me and confiscated about 60 dogs. Or people who fight them just leave them in the street. I've found three like that near me already. Police pick up a dog on the street and take it to the shelter. Most people in this area who own them don't license them because of insurance reasons and cetainly don't have id on their collars.
Actually I have to agree, a lot of people in the south do think pit bulls are thug accessories. A lot of people think otherwise of course, but when you see a group of teens walking their pit bulls and rottweilers and trying to look 'tough'.. When I walked Ramoth and we encountered these twerps, we'd invariably be asked 2 questions. "What kinda dog is that?" and "Can she fight good?" I don't know what it's like in other areas, but dog fight busts are way common here where we live. I am not sure if it's still this way but I know that Pit bulls and Rotts (even puppies) used to top the euthanasia list at our local Humane Society because so many people use use them for fighting. Staff members said it was almost impossible to adopt out dogs of those breeds because everyone worried about the background the dogs came from.
ahhahah alot of stupid people around my area also.. when i'm runing with my husky, they always want to fight my dog... i say NO cus my dog is NOT a fighter but a lover...hehehehehe then I said he doesn't fight but if you want to race, I guarantee no pits can catch my husky....my husky can climb a 6 foot fence to get away from a pit anytime... he have blazing speed...
i'm from down south.. can't get any souther than TExas.. anyways we play bball all year round.. alot of guys drag their pits to the court and they be getting attentions... all the ewwww and arrrrsss.... so I decide to spite them, one day I brought my yorkie Sade all dolled up... they were like what kind of dog is that??? none of them ever heard of a yorkie before.. they think that dogs such as yorkies are sissy people dogs.... I just tell them whatever cus I know my dog is worth 10 times more than their pits..
Hello, For all of you who admire and like Pit Bulls, please help us in our attempt to stop the ban on them. We live in GA and they are trying to ban them. I know there are many counties and cities who also want to ban them because of bad people who fight them and do not take care or watch of them. We all need to get together and fight This. Even though you might not live in Georgia, we still need your support. For when it comes time for your city, we will be there to fight for you too!
It is estimated that only 250,000 out of the 4.9 million Pit Bulls are being fought and abused. Although this is a large number, it is not in comparison to all of the good owners and well taken care of pits. Please visit our website at www.haynespitbulls.com/fightbsl and join our yahoo group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/americaagainstbsl and help us. Thank you, Allison
Thugs EVERYWHERE in the US think pits are accessories. I live in the dirty south, too so don't think you have to state "facts" to me.
My point was, people like that get these dogs for the WRONG reason. Namely, in order to look tough. I'm not generalising and saying that ALL thugs get pits, or that ALL thugs with pits are the ones to blame.
All you have to do is watch rap videos or drive through a ghetto to see what I'm talking about.
This is a very intense question. I had to really think hard how this came to be. When did this dog who was at one time an American Symbol become a notorious killer?
I, too, have to agree with heathermom's analogy of the thug accessory. It's not just specifically narrowed to one region, but Nationally. Celeb personalities such as Rap stars who used the pit bull as part of their persona, made it a fad to many with low self esteem, who view these type of people as roll models. Movies and music videos show pit bulls as "killer" guard dogs.
As someone else mentioned, pit bulls are a dime a dozen. As the fad grows, so does the number people breeding them. And as most fads go, they grow tiresome to most. The dog is left to fend for itself on the end of a chain in the back yard, turn loose on the street, picked up by Animal Control, or tortured for the lack of anything else better to do. The ones that end up in shelters usually don't make it out alive due to the number of them and people's perseption of them.
All it would take is for people to overcome their breed prejudice and view the American Pit Bull Terrier as a dog of courage, loyalty, and a hero capable of being therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, law enforcement K-9, and family dogs to make them less appealling to the "thug." element.
Ill state fact when i please. you just seem to want to put thugs and pits on the same level. which is stupid!!! true some get them for the wrong reasons(we ALL know this), but so do alot of "UPPER CLASS" an Rednecks...

I live in the south as well. I see more people trying to actually help the breed more than hurt it. Actually American Bulldogs are becomming more popular. Pits are no more common in the "thug" world than Rotties and Dobies are. If you actually did some research there are a few rap stars that do alot for the breed. Of course you will alway have your bad apples. Before making comments think about how it will come across to other people. If you think about it there are more "thugs" with Pits in NY then the south!
More rednecks in the south with Pits.
Also, this post so looks like someone is trying to start another "pit hater" post. Why can't people actully leave the touchy posts alone?
