Adult chimps can be very aggressive. They hunt in packs and kill meat in the wild, it's all a part of normal chimp social behavior. Given the fact that these are highly intelligent primates that show significant reasoning skill, I am sure that htey really were jealous of the cake.
chimps are highly intelegent animals and are capable of learning more so then most other animals. Which leads me to believe that the ones that attacked were not well socialized and trained around people. I do not believe they would have acted this way if they were. Just my opinion. Also it would help if they were actually housed in a place they could not get out of.

I'm an animal lover so I don't like that they were killed. I mean, you lock up some wild, untamed animals in smaaaall quarters like that and expect them not to be provoked easily and agressive? Here is why wild animals need to stay wild.
Respect all life forms, and love many. However, if someone and or something is trying to kill/injure me and or my family extreme prejudice is required, not a tough guy or try to sound like one. Certain animals are wild for a reason. I appreciate the fact that Chimps are essentially 98% the same as us...speaking of DNA. However, that 2% could bite you at any time. Coyotes, Fox and felines without collars(that are getting my avian friends) are unwelcome around my place, just speaking my piece. African hunters have a motto..."Use enough Gun". I have for better or worse.
How many "sons" did Jane Goodall and Miss D. Fossey have?? I'm hardly a lunatic. Its self preservation. Dogs resemble people so to speak but were obviously not closely related on the basis of genetics. I live on a farm. Coyotes, fox, uncollared felines and the once in a while wolf...god forbid are unwelcome. I hunt I fish I'm country. Just my piece.
I agree there was obviously no other alternative at that moment then to shoot and kill the chimps. I feel so sorry for these people. I have to say i feel even more sorry for the chimps that died. One because they deserved to be free in their own setting not locked up and two because if they had to be caged they should have been secure to prevent something like this from happening. The injury of this man and the death of these chimps are equally tragic.
I too have had to shoot wild predators in the past. i hated it but it is necessary. these animals were brought to where they were and not properly contained or maintained it is not their fault.
pitsanddobes, you said it better than I could. Sometimes emotions get the better of us, especially me. I talk tough once in a while but I have a heart. Lost dog I'm there. An unknown person has car trouble out in the sticks...I'm there. We're all primates when it comes down to it.
I believe they were killed as no one could stop them from attacking.
I am an animal lover too. I feel bad that the are just acting as they do in the wild and they DID attack the wrong "game" if you will, BUT!!
I will NEVER ever put an animals life above a humans. They said they saved a life out of it. So, it unfortunately needed to be done. There is no other way to do it, when they are tearing a person apart. If I was on the recieving end of that mauling, I would want someone to kill that chimp, wouldnt you??? I wanna go home to my family!!!
I have seen dogs, usually Pits in my area where I work EMS, attack and maul children. Those are the dogs they use for drug protection, and they are usually debarked. So anyone who walks upon one, either in the house or if they get loose, has no warning as to what is to come, Myself included. I love pits, and I know that the dogs I run into are a product of their upbringing. Its still not the dogs fault IMHO.
It never fails to amaze me how people will get mad at the people who kill or try to beat the dog off a child. I doubt they would feel the same way if if was there loved ones. People need to remember that a human life comes before an animals life. Or it should. It does in my book anyways.
This is NOT directed at anyone here, I love you all and you all have been great and helpful to me.
