hello again, tonight my 5 month old pup stole a piece of pizza away from my five year old daughter. i tried chasing her down all over the yard, but she growled. i did not know if i should actually take the pizza away, and take the chance of getting bit. she is not aggresive, but when she got the pizza her attitude changed quick. well, my pup ended up eating a whole piece of pizza because i just let her be. she ran outside with the pizza. what would you have done? chase her down,or ignore and let her eat the pizza and be more careful next time. Well, I hope she is not sick tonight!!
kids eating are an easy target for the pup or dog that wants a treat.somehow animals know that it's real easy to get food from kids. the serious side of what happened is that the dog growled at you when you went to get it. even more serious is the fact that you let the pup keep the pizza. stealing food should be discouraged though with kids it is not always easy. the next time the pup steals food you absolutely need to get it away from him and reprimand him for growling. he is trying to assert himself over you, this is a form of dominance aggression and needs to be dealt with now while the pup is young and before he starts to develop new aggressive behaviors. food guarding is natural to wild animals but it is not something that can be accepted for a dog living with a family. read some books that deal with food/possesion guarding and dominant behaviors.
I agree with scout, you should have chased that dog down, pinned it to the ground by the throat in a dominance roll, and taken the pizza away from it even though you might have gotten bit. As it is, you reinforced the dog's belief that not only is it ok to steal food, it can do it and get away with it. You've just created a bigger problem by letting the dog get away with it even just this one time. And to the dog's eyes, your kids are now easy targets. If I were you, I'd keep the dog on a leash tied ot your side at all times now, especially during meals. That way if it goes for the food it isn't going to get far. NEVER let the dog get away with stealing food. I"ve literally opened a dog's mouth as it was growling and snapping to withdraw a stolen chocolate chip cookie from a dog. But she never did it again..
Thanks for the advice. I am now going to use the leash especially during mealtimes and next time she tries to steal food, I am going to pin her down and take it away from her! Thanks for the info Minniyar about how you took down a dog to take a cookie away. I bet she learned her lesson quick. I may have to try it if she does this again. Well, thanks scott and minniyar for the great advice! :)
Lol ,Oh the memories!! hehehehe I also had a similar situation a few years back with a little peekapoo . My kids then only 5 and 3 were eating hamburgers on trays in the living room (T.V. night ) and the little buggar came right up and snatched a 1/2 hamburger off her plate right in front of us!! We couldn't believe our eyes!! Well the best thing was my 5 year old reacted so quick that she pinned the dog down and grabbed the hamburger but the dog wasn't letting go. My husband and I were trying to put our plates down to help her and my husband grabbed the dog and she had the hamburger no way was she letting go It was HER supper after all . In the end my daughter did get the hamburger and the dog never tried it again !! He new what he was dealing with. So I think the next time you better hunt that dog down until you get the food back and show him who the leader is not him. We make our dogs stay on the mat by the door or in the beds while eating is going on now. Lol oh the memories!!
I have a funny story although it's not dog but cat. I got Hiedi when she was about 3 to 4 weeks old and very food aggressive . Well any way my hubby ,myself , and my son where eating in the living room watching some movie. I made Rib Eye Steaks . Hiedi comes around the corner ,remember she's only 3 to 4 weeks old. Jumps on my sons plate, pulls the steak off . Runs with it . The steak was bigger then the cat. Needless to say he lost his dinner that night. Hiedi was not going to give it up.We still have her, she's now 5 years old. She will still try to fight with the best of them for that steak.Don't dare try to take it away, she'll remove your fingers. She's our Hiedi.
