My older female dog has suddenly started refusing her dog food. She has been on KD food for some time for kidney disease. She used to devour her food, but now turns her nose up to it. She is very interested in table food, but I don't like to give her that, as I'm not sure what effect it will have on her kidney problem. Should I be concerned?
good for you not giving in to your dog's desire for table food, which can indeed be too rich and harder on the kidneys. If she's got kidney problems, it won't hurt to take her to the vet to make sure all is normal. She may just be holding out in hopes that you give her a better treat than her food. Is she not eating at all, or just nibbling instead of eating a normal meal?
First I would try a little flavoring of something she likes from the table mixed with her food, or some of that new Iams flavoring...It may be she is bored with her food. If that still doesnt work try the vet.
Well I have been to the vet... she prescribed the KD diet. She pretty much just refuses the dog food unless you put something more interesting in it, like some table scraps or something. Her weight seems to be OK. I just get tired of throwing away most of the dog food every day.
I would put her food out for her, give her a chance to eat it, if she walks away, put it back into the bag and try again in a couple of hours or try at the next feeding. And do the same thing over and over. Shes probly playing you for something different.Do not give her even the smallest treat, human food or anything. She will not starve herself. Its like gambling, but she gave it once so mabe she'll give it again.
