well, i really like huskies, and i have watched a few videos about them pulling sleads, i was thinking that i could do this with the GSDs, i wouls put harneses on them and train them to pull a kocart thing with weels instead on a sledge. it is sapost to be really good for there legs, we were thinking that this would help, them strengthin there legs for the shows, i would do this with the dogs that we don't show aswell, they just love to run. i was thinking that i could get them useto harnesess, and in the sumer, i would get my uncle and brothers to make a cart think for them to pull, i would attatch the cart to them and walk infront of them so they could get use to pulling things.
i really just want them to get fitter, and the same with me :) the harnesses can be quite expensive :( i will need to pic the dogs carfully because they can be very jelouse and some of them don't like each other.
Personally I would look for a miniature horse harness. It just may be the thing to use. Our GSD was huge-120#-I would have loved him to pull my son around! But we had a calf that we trained to do that instead.
most of them are over a year old, i was thinking that i could buy one harness, and maybe, my uncle who is a polstra could make them with extra pading, but i don't now. they just love to run. they would run all day if they could. i could only do it on a sunday and in the holidays. but at least it would be something for them to look forward to : ) i'm actualy getting kinda exited about it lol
My wife and I were at a dogsled race event a couple years ago with friends who are into that thing. We saw a lady with a team of GSDs that were awesome. I train my dogs for search and rescue but have had one pull me on X country skis. A shepherd can be trained for almost anything. Have fun.
Actually I am in the middle of training my GSD's with harnesses.I use horse halters and I think I am going to try a large dog harness. I fasten two cotton or nylon horse leads to the harnesses and then hook that onto a sled or wagon deprnding on the weather. attach a leash to the dogs collar and walk by their heads. It really is good for them, since it is best for working dogs to have a job to do.
Why don't you save your money and buy one harness to use for a pattern? The ones they use on the sled teams are just webbing, padded with a double thickness of polar fleece accross the chest and shoulders.
