I'm finally, after a long wait, going to receive my Chinese Crested dog next week. He comes health guaranteed, and with all his shots and, he's already neutered. What should I expect? He will probably need his initial checkup, does he get a shot again on this visit? Will I need to start him on heartworm medication right away? What about flea medication?
Any ideas / experience would help, just trying to figure out what I should expect for him.
If the dog is 5 months old chances are he already has had all of the shots he needs, but the vet will look at his records and determine if he needs any more. At the vet I worked for we always run a stool check on the first visit and depending on what dewormers he's already had we usually deworm on the first visit. But again, if he's 5 months old the chances are he won't need an intestinal deworming. They will also do a full exam. They will start on a heartworm preventative. You are right about it being very important. A drug rep. once gave me a statistic that said that 25% of all pets diagnosed with heartworm disease were indoor pets only. Mesquito's carry the disease and they can come in the house too. There are a lot of different heartworm preventatives that the vet will probably go over with you. My dog is on Interceptor which is a pill you give once a month and it protects against heartworms and deworms for hookworms, roundworms and whipworms. You can use Frontline with it to treat for fleas and ticks. At our clinic we also send home a puppy pack with information on all of the heartworm/flea products. I usually tell people to start on a preventative right away and then read about the others. You can always change the next month if you find one you like better. That's usually about it. Have fun with your new pet! :)
