My boxer has this third eyelid. The vet told me that all boxers have a third eyelid but some you see more than others. Well i have never seen them on any other boxer except mine. Sometimes you can't see it at all but most of the time you see this little red eyelid at the bottom corner of his eyes. Does anyone know what I am talking about? Does anyone know anymore info on it like does it hurt the dog, or can you fix it?
I thought all dogs had 3 eyelids, the red one that is under the other, the nictating layer, I think it's called. I think it's more commonly seen in some breeds than others. I saw it more in my akita when she was dozing than I do in my mixed breed dog. You can't correct it or remove it (well you could I suppose, but I'd rank it up there with mutilation), it's just there to keep the eye moist.
all dogs have it as well as cats. does your boxer have droopy bottom lids? sometimes it is more visible on dogs that have droopy lower lids. also sometimes that membrane will swell up into a tiny red ball which is referred to as a cherry eye. then you need to have the cherry eye cut out.
