I read on a website (and I can't remember what it is now), but they suggested that you get a puppy and every single time it barked you should correct it. They meant scolding, "bad dog," etc...not physical corrections.
Do you think this would work? Do you think it would be wrong to do to a dog?
I don't think that it is wrong to correct a dog's barking. You hear all the time that people spray water in the dogs face when it barks to correct it. I don't personally see anything wrong with it. There also devices for the house that keeps dogs from barking.
A good way to train a dog not to bark, is whenever the trigger that makes the dog bark appears quickly start giving your dog small pieces of chicken or tuna until the trigger for barking is gone. soon the dog will be looking at you and waiting for the chicken or tuna, and will not bark. you gradually cut back on the treat until you only give one piece each time a trigger appears. this has worked wonders with my own dogs!
My dogs are not big barkers but they do bark on occasion.I do like the fact that they will bark if they hear something at night that in their eyes is suspicious<sp>,as to warn us or scare away intruders. But 9 outta 10 times its the neighbors coming home late.So if i know what it is they are barking at then what i did was clap my hands one time loudly to distract their focus and told them a firm QUIET and when they stop and give me that look(we all know that half cocked head look lol) i praise them and get them a treat. Now i just say quiet and they settle but i always praise them so they know i appreciate the warning.i dont tell them quiet though till im sure of what they are barking at....
The food thing works good with my beagle ^.^ with dropping it at least. When does your dog bark, and why? Skittles only barks when she wants me to play with her or when she can't get her toy, she doesn't bark for fun. If that's the case, what I do is tell her no, and when she stops barking, I do whatever she wants me to do.
I don't have a dog right now. But am getting one this summer. I'd always crossed dogs like MinPins and Beagles off of the list of dogs I'd consider getting because they are barkers and I live in an apartment. So I'm interested in ways to get a dog to be less of a barker.
But I believe these people wanted you to correct a dog for barking at any time. Be they outside, barking at strangers, barking for attention. They said this would let the dog know that barking simply isn't allowed AT ALL and the dog would grow to be pretty much silent.
All dogs will bark sometimes. You cannot train a dog to be totally silent. It is impossible. Like when a stranger is approaching your house- a dog WILL bark to alert you. a good dog for not barking, though is a basenji. all they can do is yodel.
