Hi, I have two male pitbulls and three female pitbulls and I am wanting to start training my white male who is a year and 4 months. He has an awesome body structure to him and I think he would love it, he already pulls my husband and I everywhere on rollerblades. My other male is only 11 months old and he is bigger than my white male, but I think he is too young to start on weight pulling. Can anyone with experience in this give me pointers on a good way to start and good routines to follow?
get a pulling harness for your dog first. their are many different things you can do. always start out light and work your way up. bricks, tires, and tree limbs work great.also a kid's little red wagon works great because it has wheels and don't cost as mush as the "wagons" they use in weight pulling contests. also get a strong dog hiking backpack and place light weights or water bottles in it. helps with the back mussles.i do this with my american pit bulls and trust me it works out great. hope it helps.
Thanks a lot Leanda, I need all the help I can get. I am purely an amateur in this sport and am trying to learn all I can. I know it will be fun for my dogs, I just want to do it right. Do you think my 11 month old male is too young to start? Thanks.
start light, but first get your dog used to a backpack itself. then put the water bottles in.do this everyday for about 20 mins at a time.with your dog being young, please don't "push" your dog to quickly. your dog will let you know when he has had enough. hint: once your dog is used to pulling a wagon, its fun to take the kids for a ride.i do this with my pits.
Thanks guys for your info, I have looked up a lot of sites and they do talk quite a bit how to start out. I just like hearing people's personal experiences with this subject. My males are more than ready, especially my white male! He is so wired for sound all the time it's not funny. If I have him in his 10 by 10 kennel or on a chain, all he does is pace all day long. We feed him twice a day and he looks like he's almost starving because he burns all his food off. I think it's time to put that energy to some good use!
HI i have competed in ADBA weight pulling competions for about 3 years now one thing that I need suggest to you about your dogs diet is that with the more energy your dog uses the more food it needs I actually suggest free feeding has long as your dog doesnt eat like a pig when it does eat he will be alright also a high protien diet will help with with strenght and stamina devolopment and muscle mass my dogs love mashed potatoes and cooked rice. Diamond performance brand dog food is great and runs about 31% min crude protien in the dog food and 35% min. crude protien in the puppy food which is great for your 11 month old puppy food is usually recommended for up to two years of age. I start my pups out at about 4 mo. of age. Do start light work with them every other day. one day of healing is a must. Also keep them around alot of fresh cold water, water is like motor oil in your car for dogs.Good luck and maybe we will get to compete some day
