LOL. I just wanted to know if there was some sort of written rule on how many times i can give my puppy a bath in a week? Ya know if she would stay out of the pond i wouldn't have to ask this question.
I'm not Darwin or a pro groomer. Dogs evolved long before us and are tougher. All my dogs have been working or herding breeds, few Brittany's thrown in. Unless they rolled in the guts of a dead sea lion they got the hose and some charcoal based shampoo at my place. If your buddy requires detailed grooming and a delicate approach I apologize. Natural bodies of water are good, unless it's a treatment plant...LOL. As long as your dogs skin is well, he/she enjoys it, go for it. Good to get the pup into the routine at an early age.
Only thing about natural water sorces is the fact that my puppy Mollie sleeps in the house. The pond that she intentionaly swims in smells like someone threw dead fish in it. LOL. Otherwise she could smell as bad as she wanted too.
You are preaching to the choir my friend...I know what you are saying. I would say, no more than 3 times monthly. Just my opinion, no science or canines that required "advanced' procedures at my place. I could be very wrong. Some one will set us straight.
Perhaps you could try keeping her away from the pond and investing in a pool of her own from Wal-mart. The round, hard plastic pools. They sell them for less than $10 each.
I raised Labs for years, and while we made several trips a week to Lake Michigan for swimming, exercising and retrieving practice, I still had a pool for each of the dogs at home.
Keep them filled with fresh water, if you let the dog continuously swim in the same water, it can become filled with bacteria (and algae, which is hard to clean off of a lighter coated Lab, such as my Yellows). Plus they will drink water from the pools and you don't want them getting sick from that.
I used the larger kiddy pools for the adult dogs and the smaller pools for the puppies. They loved it and it seemed to satisfy them on the days that we weren't able to make the trip to the big Lake.
Please don't be bathing your puppy several times per week. You are drying out his/her skin and hair. Use a mild puppy shampoo, when you do bath her. Ask your vet, but I would think he would suggest limiting baths, especially for a puppy.
What kind of dog do you have, by the way. Tell us more about her, other than her love for swimming in stinky water.
I really wouldn't recomend more than once a week, only because it could cause dry, flaky skin. If you do have to bath the dog more than that I would use a conditioner. I wouldn't keep your dog from swimming though, it's very good exercise. Unless of course, you don't want your dog swimming in the pond. Or you're just tired of giving her a bath every day.
I am a pet stylist, and we bath "many" dogs on a weekly basis, use a quality shampoo with no detergents and your puppy will be fine. Most flakey skin problems are the result of poor diet, not excessive bathing.
I use a soapless oatmeal shampoo that I got from petedge.com. It is really super mild and doesn't dry out the skin or fur. I sometimes have to bathe Chloe' a couple times a week in the wet months...and It doesn't cause any problems.
