Ok well first off, did the puppy have a black membrane attached to it when it was born? That's the placenta. It should be very dark, looks like liver, and should be aobut the same size as the puppy. She probably tried to eat it (let her, it is nutritious and works as a laxative too heh). If you haven't seen one, it may come with the next puppy, just make sure you keep track of how manuy placentas there are and how many puppies, if there's a mismatch after the whole whelping is done, there could be a retained one, which is a problem. If more than 2 hours pass and no more puppies come (and you can feel puppies in her) you need to take her to the vet. Or if more than one hour passes with hard labor the entire time and she is straining to have another puppy, take her to the vet.
Ok thanks No there wasn't anything we had to cut the cord ,she couldn't reach him to do it as she is so big . She hasn't been able to reach herself the past few weeks to clean herself . Anyways she just started pushing about 15min ago again so i will time her. I just wasn't sure if the afterbirth was suppose to come out first then a puppy . We will be counting thats for sure. i am also expecting a long night ahead of me!! But it is worth it they are so cute!! I think i will be going to the vet anyways tomorrow just for the check up. Oh by the way the first one is a boy!!
good plan on taking the dog and puppies to the vet. Call and ask when would be the best time to bring them in, how close to birth, if everything goes ok. The following morning might be a bit much for hte new (and probably exhausted) mom. Keep em warm and good luck.
I'm going to bed, I will try not to worry bout you guys all night! I feel like a nervous aunt or something hehe, I think a lot of the people on this forum are very eager to hear how everything goes and hopoing it all goes smoothly. Good luck to you guys and to Lily since she'st he one doing all the hard work!
