My little Logan...well he is not little anymore....NEEDS to go run outside. But im patiently waiting until he gets his shots. But how many? in reality does a pup need before he is safe to go outside...from parvo. He wont get rabies..i live in the city, and trust me no dogs or any other animal will be biting him.
He's had his destemper, 2 parvo, deworming and everything else that pups are supposed to have up to 10 weeks. can i take him outside??????? i can't wait 6 more weeks!! my house will be destroyed....He has so much energy that he needs to run it off, and the yard that we used to take him to is off limits.
The vet says 16 weeks...but is it really 16? Has anyone took their dog out before? After how many parvo shots does a pup take? Im going crazy with him...he needs to walk!!!!
I start taking mine out at 12 weeks and after their second shots. As for rabies, it is reqired by law. It is not a choice, and if anything happened and your dog bit smoeone (it happens) he could be taken, euthanized and his head cut off to check for rabies.
The rabies vaccine, sadly, is more for your protection then risk that your pet is going to get rabies. But rabies does happen, rabid racoons for example could run up the street jump into your yard and attack the dog.
Beliving it never will happen is setting yourself up for heartache.
Why can't take the dog outside? That's a new one to me. Generally when people mean you can't take the puppy out, they mean you cant take him out to like the dog park, or out to Petco, where they're being exposed to a lot of other dogs who may or may not be vaccinated. Not outside at all. How on earth are people supposed to get their dogs started on good housetraining habits if they're not allowed outside the house at all until theyr'e 14 or 16 weeks old?
Take the poor dog out back and let him run off his energy. Most people I know start taking the puppies outside as soon as they're old enough to run around on teh grass.
ok maybe i should have explained my self a little more....
The pup goes outside about 5 times a day...if not more...but he only goes to a yard where no other dogs go. Its pretty big, but now im having problems in my building with him running around and digging up the flowers. I want to be able to take him outside of the yard, like to walk around the block perhaps, a soccer field etc..... What my question is when can I start doing that?
Lol, maybe i should phrase my self differently......
You do want to be very careful where you take him right now. I've seen puppies come into our clinic with parvo and they've only had 1 or 2 shots. The reason for the 16 week mark is because that's when their mother's immunity starts to wear off and they start relying more on their own. He really isn't completely protected until then. Anyway, your backyard should be fine for him, but I wouldn't take him out anywhere just yet. Parvo can stay in the ground for several years. Maybe you could take him outside on a long lead, or maybe one of those retractable leads so that you can let him run a little, but still keep him under your control. He's really a little too young to take on a long walk anyway. By the way he's adorable! :)

thanks for all the info..luckily , I called up the management of the building and gave them an ultimatum.....plus I had about 25 other dog owners to back me up. The yard is now a doggie playground..... I also spoke to my vet and he advised me that as long as the dogs are vaccinated, which all the dogs in the building are, they could interact. As long as i dont take him outside of the building property..which I dont think should be a problem....we have a few acres of grassy lawn area.
