We periodically give Georgie dental bones. She usually does not finish them in one sitting and sometimes will just leave the bone by her crate until she wants it again. Every once in a while we find one she really likes. She will eat about 3/4's of it and keep hiding the rest.
Bought one the other day and she keeps hiding the little part that is left. She walks around with it whining and whining and trying to find a place to hide it. She will find a place and then 5 minutes later she will decide to move it and whine and whine. It is funny but it is starting to get slightly annoying. A couple of times I took the bone and hid it for her. She remembers the next day where she hid it and will hide it again the next day. I think I am ready for her to finish eating it.
It is so funny. She has several of her beds in the house. She sometimes will hide it real good, other times she goes to one of her beds and digs like she is burying it and sticks it in the corner of her bed. Like we can't see it.
Must be some natural to them. Does anyone else's dogs do this??
yes my dog will hide bones and toys. they usually do this in the wild when they are satisfied and something primal kicks and says "save the rest" and they will hide it. problem is they are feed on a regular basis and forget about it till i find it several days, or weeks later.
Our Basenji, Magnum, does this all the time. As an added bit of fun for us to watch, he also always brushes his nose/muzzle on the couch (or wherever he's hidden it) in the direction of the bone, like he's covering it in dirt or something. He sometimes spends five minutes making sure he's properly covered it in "dirt." He'll stop and look at it for a few seconds, then decide it's not quite covered and brush some more "dirt" toward it. Sometimes he completely circles the bone, brushing "dirt" on it as he goes. How he determines when enough is enough, I don't know. It's always in plain view, at least to us. He must have quite an imagination!
Minpin Mom~ thanks for making this topic. Roxy does the same thing. I thought it to be very funny. She will eat a big portion of her pig ears and just leave this flakey mess. She tends to tear her pig ear in little peices. But the rediculous part is that she will hide them my clothing. One istance is that she will climb on my lap and find a little cranny in my clothing or blanket ant scratch at it with the pig ear in her mouth and leave it there so visible on top of me. If i throw it off she will do it again and again and again. Its very hysterical. And she does this with many things as if she is "saving them for later"
That's funny Roxystar!! Georgie tried to hide something underneath my butt the other day when I was laying on the ground.
Watch those pig's ears. It was one of the things the Vet told me not to give Georgie when I was having her checked out for her screaming fits. Bad for all dogs but especially the small dogs. They do love them though.
My female frenchie will go into my room as soon as we get home from work(they come to work everyday)she will pick up her huge bone and walk around the house with it and make sure her brother Ozzy can see it, walk up to him and then past him, I think she really just wants him to try and take it, so she can growl at him, and watch him back down. She such an alpha girl, its really funny to watch. Then she will go and hide it, then Ozzy will wait till shes out of the room and go in and find it then he'll grab it and bring it out and start chewing it. And Leeza does notice, she'll start to growl, and then when hes not looking she'll sneak in there and grab it.And then start to walk around with it all over again. This all could go on for a few hours.
Sue, that is funny. I have only one dog so I don't experience that. Keeps them busy I am sure!!
Pigs ears are very high in fat. Some dogs can tolerate them but some get sick right away. For toy dogs, anything like that can result in pancreatis (sp?), which can be very serious. I would ask your vet what he or she thinks about them for your dog.
