I took my dog to a a new vet. They treated her so poorly. All these people cared about was money. I feel horrible to have taken her there. Because this is my first pet i am not so sure what signs to look for in a good vet. I ask a few questions, but how do you really know if they are being honest. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you for your help.
Well not all vets are the same. How they handle the animal is very important. There was a vet around here that tried to tell a couple that they needed to take control of their 6 week old Pom, show dominance. So he decided to show them how!! So he grabbed the muzzle really hard and pushed it into the table, and held it there. Well anyway some how he killed the puppy, I'm not sure how but the owners were present and horrified. This just proves you do need to be cautious, this vet knew nothing about canine behavior and or was misinformed, And a complete idiot. He was a new vet from another country, that had just opened his own practice. I don't know if hes still around. Look for a female vet, their bedside manner is usually better(in my experience!!!). Look for a vet thats been around for many years, and been recommended by friends.
it is very hard to tell whether a vet is good or not.working behind the scenes i can tell you there are some i wouldn't trust to take my dogs temperature let alone make a diagnosis on my animal. i have worked with both men and woman vets and find that woman don't always have a better bedside manner. recommendations from other pet owners are a good place to start. if you think they treated your pet badly. find someone else. it is a shame that alot of vets are only interested in money. when it comes down to treating an animal its a shame that if you can't afford it your alternative is the pits. if i owned a vet hospital it would be a charitable hospital for those of us that love our pets and would do anything for them if we could afford it. of course i probably wouldn't be open for very long because its money that makes the world go round.
Not all vets are bad. My vet is wonderful. There are like 5 of them in the office which I know because I used to volunteer at my vet's office. There was this one PeTA video on the web that my friend was telling me about. He would get mad and go beat up the animals in the back. He picked up a cat and punched it. I would like to kick his *beep*. However, that was a rare occasion. Most vets love animals. That vet got his liscense taken away but then later got it back. Again, I didn't see it but my friend did. I would like to take a bunch of pit bulls and unleash them on him and see how he likes it... hehehe........
I'd go find another vet. You want to shop around, after all, this is someone youre going to be trusting your baby with for his lifetime. If you had a child and took her to the doctor and you didn't like the doctor, would you take her back? (assuming the HMO let you change physicians..)
It's hard to find a good vet! My husband insists that we take the pug to "his" vet, and although the woman has shown that she is very competent, she never asks if we want to do tests, she tells us she's going to. She has kind of a "superior" attitude and comes across as rather cold. 2 years ago, just before we had to pts our other pug, she said that all my husband had to do was, and I quote, "dump some more money into him, and he'll be fine" 3 days later the poor guy was pooping uncontrollably, while he ate! Come to find out, he had a serious neurological problem that could not be treated! However, this same woman went out and personally bought chicken breasts, cooked it, and then hand fed our current pug when he was deathly ill 4 years ago. Go figure! I have a vet that I take "my" dogs to that I love! My turtle goes there too, and this vet will call me to check up on my pets after they've been ill. And, if I forget to call him back and give him an update, he'll call again! My OWN doctor won't even do that! haha
I had this vet that Iwas ing my dogs to for years. There's one vet in particular I didn't like, the rest I did ,I think they cared . Over the years I think the owners got jaded.I think a lot of good vets left because of the owers. Well any waylast summer I was going to go away for 4th of july. It was last minute choice. I called around to all kennells the tld me they where full. So I called my vet,I was surprised when they told me they could take my dogs. They really didn't have the room. They only said they could take them because they wanted the money. My husband brought them in. He wanted to see where they were giong to stay,he seen these 2 wire crates in a old part of the house, not the new kennells. They assured him my dogs where giong to be moved to the new kennells. My dogs where never moved to the new part of the house. Were my dogs where crated was not secure, the latch was broken on the door to the living room, plus all the windows were open in the living room, only closed by a screen. When my dogs are left in my house no screens are ever left open. Both of my dogs broke out of the crates, both got up stairs,Sadie jumped through the window. If the house was secure Sadie would still be alive. This happened sometime in early morning. A cop sais he had seen Sadie by Algonquinn Park about 7am,but they didn't report missing until 12pm.They didn't tell us until 12:30 pm.The owners where no where's to be found. It took them 5 days to finally run an add in the paper, they paidfor it . Any sightings they told us too late. She was missing for 3 weeks and was hit and killed on 84. I made sure they paid to have her cremated. (R.I.P) my Sadie. That day when my hubby drove both of them over,I had thid awful gut feeling that something bad was going to happen. I ignored it,I said this is just nerves.Sadie trusted us to take care of her and we let her down, she lost her life because we let her down. This is a vet I trusted for years, this vet knew Sadie and Tigger. The vet I go to now ,I think he cares about my animals. My husband even said yestarday when he picked up Piper he has a good feeling about them, and the tech loves Piper and Tigger. She has 2 pits herself.Sorry this is so long.
Most vets are not just looking for the money. There are some great ones out there. Ask around your friends and neighbors. You want a vet who will take the time to give your pet a complete exam and answer any questions you have. You want them to treat your pet like it was their own. The vet i work for, i took my pets to him for 10 years and then they asked me to come work. He's great, concerned, sympathetic and always great with the animals. We only see dogs, cat, some hamsters, rabbits and birds, he is the same with all pets and i don't know what we will do when he retires in 3 years.
