When my puppy bites I have been told by 2 different people to put my thumb in his mouth and press down on the inside of his bottom jaw (under his tongue I think) because dogs hate it and they will associate this with the biting....they didn't say whether or not it was painful and I don't really want to try to find out. Is this cruel? It sounds pretty cruel....but maybe dogs are tougher than I thought?
thats a new one i never heard of before. i have heard lots of things like shoving you whole fist into the back of their throat, or grabbing their boottom jaw and telling thm no bite. i have always just put my hand around their whole muzzle and told them in a firm voice no bite. so far with all my dogs that has worked. just don't hit them in the snout and tell them no bite. hitting them on the snout just makes them want to come back at you and keep biting.
I have been told that, or to press down on their tongue (they hate that as well). I dunno, it depends on your definition of cruel. You're trying to stop them from biting you, and if you were a dog, you would grab it by the face biting it, shake it and throw it to the ground. Is that cruel? Well, I guess not, thogh you might get some strange looks. The idea is to get the dog to stop, your'e doing something that is unplesant to the dog, but not actually painful. If you press down so hard the dog yelps you're pressing too hard. You want them to gag, not cry out in pain.
the place where i bought my shih-tzu told me to do that very thing. put my thumb in her mouth press down LIGHTLY! and say No Bite. seems to have worked. i think it's cute when my dog barks, hehe. i can tell when she's takin back though. silly little thing.
So it has worked for you.....I have never seen or heard of it and I thought it may have been one of those practices that people say work but they never do -- like rubbing their nose in their own poo and pee -- that one never made sense to me even when I was little! So you press lightly....I was actually told to do it hard. I felt his mouth and was told to do it pretty hard but I started to wonder whether I would push my thumb right through his mouth eg was I pushing on cartilege or bone or what! Sounds weird I know! I might give it a try because Floyd's starting to get snappy....I think he thinks its a game.....just been the last few days though. Each week there's some new behaviour to try and figure out!!!
