10 seconds? 15 seconds? I put my dog in the crate when he/she is being bad right as I catch them in the bad act. I generally leave them in there for 10 or 15 minutes even though they dont know what they've done wrong by that time. I don't let them out if they bark to get out. A dog has an extremely short memory. It's not going to 'dwell' on it's punishment. Hopefully it will remember that whatever it did, was bad because then you stopped paying attention to it.
I can tell when my doggie has done something bad. she's got that guilty look on her face. she will actually go into her crate immediatley. of course i dont let her stay in there for a long period of time. i let her know that what she did is a big no-no. i agree with what Wolf say's though. what did your dog do anyway?
this is for wolf-my dog was going through the garbadge and i corrected her a couple of times then after my 3rd time saying no bad girl i put her in for 15 min then i let her out and she kissed me and didnt go through it again after i punished her
not sure about punishment, i never had to do it with mine, i just think if you put your pet in the crate for punishment, they think when they have to go in, like when you leave the house or for bedtime that they again have done something wrong. i know quite a few people use the crate as a time out on this site, but i just never have.
You should never use a crate as a punishment! When I first got dog she was use to the crate but I started to use it as punishment and she imidately started to hate her crate. Now she is trained well enough to where she doesn't need a crate but it definitly was a major hassle then.
I never use the crate for punishment of my dogs. In my opinion, a crate is to be a safe domain for dogs. If you start using the crate as punishment, your dog may hate the crate and give you a hard time about going in there for the right reasons.
