Causes of Unusual Birth defect
One of my gsd's pups had a curly tail, and two broken hind legs.

My female German Shepherd had a litter of 6 pups, 5 male and 1 female. All were fine and healthy but one. The last puppy to arrive came out already halfway out of the water sack..he wasn't breathing right away but as the mother cleaned him he started to breath. I rubbed his back and patted him as I was told to do by a vet. He seemed okay except he was different from the others. His tail was curled like an "s" and he didn't move much. We had to feed him from a bottle. The next day we noticed that his hind legs were floppy-like and possibly broken. Any ideas of why this happend?

You mean you havent rushed that pup to the vet yet? I had a litter last year that had 1 with a cleff pallette...I took it immediatly to the vet and it was subsequestly euthanised. You need to take a long hard look at your breeding stock..you might not ever want to do a repeat breeding with the same two....Just my opinion. The tail was fault enough...but the bad legs are inhumane to let it go unchecked.

Wait a minute. Why is it that you did not mention this in your thread about being such a good breeder, with good breeding stock? I hope you are lying about this puppy. I would rather think that than think you haven't taken that poor thing to the vet.

Are your GSDs OFA certified? What are their ratings? This could be the reason you are having puppies with birth defects. Please don't breed these dogs anymore.

In another thread, you mentioned that you thought your female GSD was getting bad legs/hips from having puppies.

If she has bad hips, it is a defect and the dog should be spayed. This is not a breeding quality dog.

Since you didn't answer me before about having your dogs OFA certified, I doubt that you have had that done.

Do us all a favor and stop your back yard breeding. All of your puppies that you are raising have the potential to pass along the hip dysplacia that you were mentioning in that other thread.

People like you give honest breeders a bad name.

Oh, my.... I've never bred two dogs in my life and I KNOW that that was a horrible pick for stock, ESPECIALLY if they aren't OFA'd and CERF'd and all those tests that are almost required to have good stock these days. If you didn't at least OFA them, shame on you. I'm sorry... but shame.

One last comment. I noticed that you have been a member of this forum for about 9 months. During that time I am sure you have read the many threads on the topics you have have started, so you must have known the responses they would bring. I try to avoid these threads like the plague, and really have no desire to get caught in the cross-fire, but these threads seem very strange to me.

Did you have to help the mom by pulling the pup out?
If so you might have pulled to hard on the back legs..

This was awhile back, maybe a year ago. Unfortunately the pup died before I could take him to the vet. I did not help her get the puppy out she did it all on her own. And yes he was certified. And Cricket, I never mentioned that I was "such a good breeder with such good stock", in fact I don't even breed that much. And if I do..I don't "back yard breed", every dog that produced a litter was an accident exept for my akc gsd's and akc bull terriers which were awhile back. I'm not trying to start anything I'm just trying to find out what went wrong, don't look at the length I've been a member because although I registered awhile back, I only recently started posting in forums, maybe two days ago.

Although I have been breeding for some time I have the knowledge and dignity to say that "mutts" bring out the best quality of breeds and whether they "end up in the pound" depends on how you treat them.

Maybe you didn't say that in exact words, but you are contradicting yourself repeatly.

i read another of your threads about wanting to breed pomeranian/chihuahua mixes? you also bred a gsd with abnormalities. god help the poor homeless puppies . i think you need to do some volenteer work at a local animal shelter or better yet , take up hang gliding, skiing, cooking .something. it seems like you have WAY to much time on your hands

Well I'm sorry about that, there was definitely a mistake as you can see that sentence makes no sense. "I haven't been breeding for a long time" or something similar, where I was trying to get and prove my point on another topic. I'm not an expert and I know I'll never be one, I was just wondering if anyone had similar problems, I was looking for help not insults. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

And...I've already done volunteer work at a shelter, one of the girls suggested bringing one of the pups (if i breed the mixes), into the shelter. Although it was my plan to breed them I'm starting to think otherwise.

I dont think I answered her rudely..It wasnt my intent if it was interpreted that way..I even gave my own personal experence with abnormalities..But..I suggested that I would not do a repeate breeding with that same pair..Which I practice what i preach as far as that goes...But..then it seems in your answers that you said these were mutts any way..so what are they...GSD..or a cross..and you have had several questionalble posts lately..it is hard to keep up with what you have said and follow your questions and comments...Please try to simplify if at all possable..

I'm a little bit confused, myself. Why would someone who works at a shelter suggest that you breed your dogs, and then bring the unwanted puppies to the shelter? Why not just not breed them?
