i took tazz to the vet yesterday and he could not neuter him becasue he got sick the day before and he is not eating properly. she told me to feed him boiled chicken and rice. She also put him back on a puppy food. he was already on science diet lamb and rice for adults. the doc now put him back on natural choice large breed for puppies but, i was told that your puppy should be off puppy food at six months old. can someone please help me with info on this matter.
I usually go with what my vet tells me. She wants me to continue to feed puppy till at least a year with my GSD pups. She did say if I wanted to lessen it to mix with adult food. My pups are 8 months and she suggested last week not to take away the puppy food. BTW Diamond Dog foods are a couple notches better than sci diet and usually even a little cheaper. I've used Diamond lamb and rice for many years and have had very good luck with it.
Depends on the breed. I would recommend staying on puppy food until a year - but I know that my vet says that sometimes breeders of breeds more prone to hip displaysia will switch over the food early to slow the growth process down and give the hips a better chance of not becoming displaystic. I would say listen to your vet if you trust them. I'm not sure if your breed has hip issues or not.
By the way - I am a Science Diet fan - I have 20 dogs on SD and they do wonderfully, great coat, great weight, very healthy. I also breed and we have extremely high birth weights for the breed average, so I attribute that partially to the food they eat. I am NOT Diamond fan at all. I tried it for a while and had one dog have an allergic reaction to it, and several other started having coat problems (breaking fur, thinning, ect...)
I think food choice is a personal preference. Once again, it you trust your vet, listen to them. A good vet is like a good pediatrician. You have to know that they always have your dogs best interest in mind!
