My family and I are looking for a new puppy. We are interested in Boxers, but have heard they may have health issues including: being prone to cancer and hip problems. Does anyone agree or can help with more info.?
boxers can have hip problems, eye problems, heart problems, and heart defects. they are also prone to thyroid problems, bloat, colitis, tumors, cancer. respiratory ailments, heatstroke, and lives only 8-12 years.
Just because a breed has incidence of those doesn't mean the dog you will get will. All dogs, purebred or mixed breed, can have a wide variety of health problems, it's a breeder's responsibility to breed dogs that are tested to make sure they don't have those defects, and the prospective buyer's job to make sure that they buy only from breeders who test for those problems and provide guarantees for their puppies. If you do your research and find the right breeder, then you could get a wonderful healthy and happy companion that will live for a long time. And this isn't just true of the breed boxers, but any other breed you might consider looking into. Just do your research before you buy any breed and don't be an impulsive buyer. If you really had been interested in a Boxer, I suggest you buy a book on them and learn more about the breed, they're popular and I am sure you can buy a book for about $10 from your local bookstore easy. Check out this site for more information on Boxers. http://americanboxerclub.org/default.htm
BOXERS CAN HAVE PROBLEMS BUT SO CAN ANY OTHER BREED. WE HAVE FOUR. THEY ARE WONDERFUL, LOVING DOGS. THE PREVIOUS POSTER IS RIGHT. WE TAKE CARE OF OUR BOXERS, AND THEY DO NOT GIVE US ANY PROBLEMS. THE MOST SEVER THING WE HAVE HAD IS AN UPSET STOMACH. BOXERS CAN HAVE A SENSITIVE STOMACH, AS DO SOME OTHER BREEDS, JUST KEEP THEM ON A SPECIFIC FEED, (DON'T CHANGE ON EVERY BAG, AND DO NOT FEED HUMAN FEED,NO DOG SHOULD HAVE HUMAN FEED. I'LL ADMIT WE WILL OCCASIONALLY GIVE A PIECE OF MEAT, BUT NOT OFTEN, A CERTAINLY NOT WHAT EVER WAS LEFT ON THE TABLE. A TREAT OF VIENNA SAUSAGES OR HOT DOG IS OK. A BOXERS LOVE & AFFECTION TO THEIR PERSON IS UNQUESTIONALBE. THEY ARE HYPER PETS, WHO LOVE TO RUN AND PLAY, YET THEY ARE GENTLE WITH CHILDREN & VERY, VERY PROTECTIVE OF THEIR CHILD. AS FAR AS THE HIP PROBLEM, BOXERS ARE ON OF THE MANY BREEDS THAT HAVE THAT PROBLEM, ROTS, DOBERMINS, PITS, ANS SOME BREEDS OF BIRD DOGS, SETTERS, POINTERS, CAN HAVE HIP PROBLEMS. ALL 4 OF MINE ARE FINE. & AS FAR AS I KNOW THE PARENTS & GRANDPARENTS HAVE NEVER HAD ANY TROUBLE. A DOG WILL LIVE AS LONG AS THE PERSON WHO OWNS IT LETS IT. MEANING IF YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR PET (ANY BREED) IT WILL LIVE A LONG TIME.
