I donít understand how you are acknowledging you have a dangerous dog by letting people know that you have a dog on your property. ALL DOGS can and will bite under the right circumstances. Posting a sign is just a precaution. If all the sign say is "beware of dog" all it means is that you should be aware there is a dog on site. Not necessarily that it is dangerous.
Here is a silly joke I saw to make my point.
Upon entering a little country store, the stranger noticed a sign saying "DANGER! BEWARE OF DOG!" posted on the door glass.
Inside, he noticed a harmless old hound dog asleep on the floor near the cash register. He asked the store's owner "Is that the dog folks are supposed to beware of?"
"Yep," the proprietor answered, "That's him."
The stranger couldn't help being amused. "That certainly doesn't look like a dangerous dog to me," he chuckled. "Why in the world did you decide to post that sign?"
"Because," the owner replied, "before I posted that sign, people kept tripping over him."
love the joke! Sounds like Storm, his first night here (all 95#s of him), this pound puppy was sleeping, stretched out across the width of the sliding glass doors in the back of the house.
My daughter and daughter-in-law were sitting on the sofa talking with the lights off and the tv on. We were out. 2 grand daughters were tucked away in the back bedroom, sleeping peacefully.
Some pervert came in THROUGH the fenced yard, looked in all the windows, (had taken off his socks to break a window, then saw the slliding glass doors). He opened the slider, tripping over Stormy, who never batted an eye, much less woke up! Since he was black lab/dane mix, he was big and he was black and he was invisible. The guy tripped over him, the girls heard the sound, picked up "weapons" (lamps and something else) and chased the guy off. THAT'S when Storm woke up!
lol pyrmom my dobie would do exactly the same thing ..if a burglar entered the house he would probably lick them to death..
As for signs there is no legal requirement in the uk ( as far as im aware) i think it is different for buiseness property where they have properly trained guard dogs.
I do have signs on my gate which read "Warning .. Dog running Free in yard please close gate"
I am always alittle nervous about putting a pic of my dobie with the sign on the gate as people passing around my area are inclined to see that as a money making scam and steal the dog and hold it to ransom or use it for bredding as there is not many dobies in this area and a quite exspensive...I know it may sound too cautious but believe or not it happens quite abit in the uk and living in a sleepy little suffolk village doesnt make me an exception.
On gmtv there was a man who had his huskie stolen and thieves held it to ransom. They even dyed the dogs coat to make him look like an alsation! He got the dog back eventually though through police efforts! ~twinkletoes
We had some signs up that said "Beware of dog" I don't think any of them are up now but it wouldn't be our fault if one of my dogs bit trespassers. If someone needs in to check the meter, just ring the doorbell or don't read the meter. I don't think my dogs would hurt anybody but when they come, I always go out there and hold them so they don't jump and get too friendly. ha
