I know that someone has asked this question before but i cant seem to find the thread. i was just wondering why english bulldogs are so expensive. i dont know much about the breed and was just curious. i was also looking at a website for info on them and the website said that their average lifespan is only about 8 years. so i was just kinda wondering why they are so expensive in general and especially since they dont have a long life span. i love the breed and was just curious.
They are not easy to breed. They require c sections and even artificial insemination. They can get a lot of health problems that shorten their life too. I think they may be respitory but I'm not sure. I'm sure someone else knows more.
Bulldogs are notoriously difficult to breed. The newborn puppies have fairly large heads as puppies go, and this means that many female bulldogs cannot whelp naturally, and require c-sections. In addition, because of the shortened tracheas and mushed in noses, many male bulldogs lack the stamina and ability to breed naturally with a female, even if they're willing. They loose their breath, hyperventalate.. their forelegs are bowed a little due to generations of being bred the way they have been, and they can't grip arond the females waist for mating.. thus, artifical insemination and collection is also typically required for breeding. All of these add up to increased risk to the mother and puppies, and increased price just to care for them.. which reflects itself in increased price for potential buyers.
yeah, to add to that, I've been told that new bully puppies require 24 hour monitoring because the mommies can easily suffocate the babies (cause they're so chubby) and because they just generally need a lot of help getting a healthy start. i've been told that there is almost always artificial insem. and c-sections involved.
YEP...AI & C-section neither are cheep then add the stud fee... I have a 5 day old litter now and they do require 24 hr watching,,, they do not move around quite as well as other breeds since they are so heavy, thus cannot get out from under mom as well if sat or laid on... Great breed, the pups if a quiality breeding are beautiful,,, shoty breedings have a pit bull look,,,YUCK!!!!!!
