Someone I chat with on another message board posted this today:
I was driving when I found this dog today. She was running in the middle of a busy intersession and was almost hit by cars. One driver stopped and directed her to an apartment complex there. I stopped my car and called animal control. They told me I should take care of the dog or take her home until they got there. The dog looked thiny and was thirsty. A tenant brought water for her. Then, I noticed the dog is pregnant. I went home and brought some dog food. Dog was so hungry. She then stayed at tenant patio until animal control showed up, one hour and half later. She was so clingy and friendly and loving. I was there too and I asked the animal controls, three times, to make sure they won’t pet her to sleep. He said that they wouldn’t. The dog was sad and didn’t want to go with him; he dragged the dog very rude. I reminded him that she is pregnant. The face of sad dog leaving and begging us to not let him take her was all with me. I called animal control and told them if no owner found, I want to adopt him. They said NO, Dog has to have their criteria for adoption or will be put in sleep in three days. They dog seemed to be far in her pregnancy and they said she won’t then be adoptable and will put in sleep. I was mad, first they lied when they got her and now they won’t let me adopt her. They said they already have too many dogs in shelters and don’t need more poppies. I said I am willing to take her and the poppies. They said, NO, even if the vet said she is adoptable, she will have to have an abortion before she can be adopted and that is if she survives the surgery. But if she is too far in pregnancy, she will put in sleep. I told them, they are unbelievable, and they are going to put a pregnant dog in sleep when someone is already willing to take care of her. I don’t know what to do to save her life? I only have three days to do something? Any suggestions?
I'm hoping someone will give me some suggestions on what she can do to help the dog. I'm not sure what state she is in. Any help will be great, I don't want this poor dog to die! :(
i would have someone you know go up and say that they are the owner. but give it a day to see if the owner does show up for her first. you can always get her out and then place an ad for found dog to see if someone is looking.
That's what I was thinking. They are going to put her to sleep in 3 days after they kill her puppies :( I'm going to tell the woman that posted that what you all said. Thanks! Pray that everything goes okay!
I agree with Syrn11, get someone to claim the dog, make sure she has a good discription and save this baby. I can't believe that they would turn down a person who wants to care for the dog and the pups.
You can always try to find the real owner later, when the dog is safe.

The person that found this dog was able to locate the owner by going back to the area where she found the dog. The owner, a single pregnant woman, had abandoned the mother dog because she couldnt' afford to care for the puppies... grrr.
So Suze (my friend) was able to talk the owner into going to the shelter with her and letting her adopt the dog. So now Suze has the dog and is taking her to the vet to get checked and get ready to have the puppies.
Please keep this dog and her pups in your prayers! She wasn't taken care of during her pregnancy, so I hope all the puppies are born healthy!
What a huge releif that your friend was able to get the dog all in one piece. I cannot beleive that woman why not have taken the poor girl to a shelter. Would she want to be left on the streets? UGH she makes me sick. I could smack her. Is your friend going to adopt the pups out if they make it? I am no stranger to adopting sick animals I have two kittens that have FIV and the one I had before them had a stroke that caused some brain damage and a hyperthyroid. She was still the sweetest thing in the world, so loving a caring. She passed in November when I got my pup. :(
Makes me very mad. My friend paid all the fines that the shelter charged for abandoning the dog. She actually had to talk this woman into letting her adopt the dog though! She was going to let it be put to sleep!! UGH!!
She's never delivered pups before so I gave her a ton of links and told he to get all the info she can from her vet. Maybe she'd be able to bring the mama dog to the vet when she goes into labor.
She plans on keeping the puppies until they are ready to be adopted out. I told her never to advertise them as free to good home though.
If that stupid lady had spayed her dog in the first place, that poor dog wouldn't be going through this right now.She wouldn't be having to have puppies.Stupid people.I hope she never gets another dog, she'll probably do it again if she did get another dog.I'm done now ranting.I get so mad when I read things like this.Humans with no conience.(sp)
Another Update- My friend Suze posted this today..
I took the Dog to vet today. She did an x-ray. I was shocked to find out that there are no puppies. Poor dog has a condition call “pyometra-infected uterus”. All her tummy has is fluid and pus. She was supervised how well the dog is doing despite this infection.. She said this is probably a chronic situation. She wanted to do a surgery but said it cost thousand of dollars. The other option was to give her shot of antibiotics and continue with oral at home. She started that and I will give her the medication every night. She said the light is that she is not running a fever and does not look ill at all. Besides she is already discharging some fluid from her Uterus. But she needs to be spay ASAP. She said human society might do it much cheaper. She got all her shots and exams. Poor thing was so sweet the whole time. So now I am calling human society to see what they can do. I am also calling other vets to get an estimate from them. I hope I can find something I can afford. I rather do it in a vet office but I have to it all by myself, my husband still doesn’t talk to me, so I have to find something affordable. I will do whatever in my ability. I will keep you posted. I am concern for her but I am happy I found her or she would be put to sleep today or die of infection on the street.
Poor sweet baby. If only her first owner had spayed her she would be just fine. :(
