My 14 year old daughter told me that she wanted to walk dogs for a summer job, i thought she just wanted to take some of our neighbor's dogs for a walk. Boy was i wrong, she wants to go all out and put up signs and everything! I'm not sure what answer i should give her. Do you think dog walking would be too much to handle for a 14 year old? Should i let her do it?
being a professional petsitter myself i think it is wonderful that your daughter would like to do this. it is something that i enjoy very much and i am sure your daughter would also. here comes the but.... =)
taking care of someone elses dog(s) is a huge responsibility. no matter how careful one is there is always the chance the dog could get away from you, meet a not so nice dog on your walk and get injured, gets sick, etc. plus the responsibility of having a key to someones home and being responsible for that home while they are gone is an awful lot, IMO, to ask of a 14 year old. i get a lot of phone calls from people who asked the neighbors kids to watch their pets while they have gone away and inevitably something is always not satisfactory. and they are usually not bad things but just typical kid type stuff.
your daughter may be responsible, there are a lot of 14 yr olds who are, but it is a huge undertaking. it isnt just walking and feeding the animals.
I think it would be a great opportunity for her, but I think before she does it she should talk with a dog trianer who could give her some hints & pointers about the proper way to walk dogs on a leash and what to do if it runs away, etc.
