I have a GSD puppy who is now 14 weeks, had him for about 3 weeks. He seem to never get enough of his food. I take his portion of food that he is suppose to eat for the whole day and divide it in three portions, to feed him three times a day. He is 21 pounds and I give him almost 2 cups of Flint River Ranch food a day + treats. (1/2 a cup more than it is described on the label). It seems like he can eat twice as much.
Is this normal behaviour considering that he is growing? I have read that it is possible that overfeeding a GSD puppy can cause hip problems. Also I don't want my puppy to feel hungry all the time.
Hi Tonka Yes I talked to my Vet about it, and he told me to give him 2 cups and that's what I have been doing but he is still hungry. He goes crazy and so excided jumping all over when he sees me preparing his food. And after he is done he begs for more.
Hey...Eskie beat me to it. I was going to say that Veggies aren't bad for him. Chop them up well and start intoducing them into his meal...adding more everyday. That should help him to feel more full and not gain weight.
Hi Ben, Perfectly normal. When I got my puppy the breeder told me he'd act as if he is always hungry for a while, and inhale his food. This is because before they come home to you they have to fight with their brothers and sisters over the food. Give him a few more weeks and he will calm down.
I remember when the first few weeks with my puppy, all I had to do was open the closet door, where I kept the food, and he'd come running in like a bat out of he**. Then he'd pretty much dive into his bowl and eat like there was no tomorrow. This went on for a couple of months, now he is a picky eater! Go figure.
Hi Ben! I am not a professional but I know certain breeds can be over-eaters naturally. I'm sure certain pups can too! I think most all fruits and veggies are good for animals also... if your not sure, call your vet or just research ~ the net is an information society! I know cuz I'm an information s1*+! LOL! Good luck to you and your lil piggy ;)
ben- i have a 13 week old Tosa Inu puppy, i was initially feeding him just 3 cups(1-morn, etc.). i was concerned about the same thing. i took him to the vet and she told that i could supplement him with NutriCal 3X between meals. he loved it. i actually use it as a training treat now b/c he sees the tube and goes crazy. you can get it at any pet store. i've seen it everywhere i go. good luck
