IMHO they would be (in no particular order): Wellness; Solid Gold, Canidae; Innova; Merrick; Life's Abundance; Flint River (although none of mine would touch it); Blue Buffalo; Natural Balance; and the dog lover's soul one (drawing a blank no the exact name).
There's not really ONE food that is better than every other food. There's a few foods that are better over all than others though because of the quality of ingredients they use. I have just started using chicken soup for hte dog lovers soul and I found it to be far cheaper per pound than the others, and it's readily available in my area, I dont have to pay to have it shipped to me. For comparison, at the only store in town that sells Canidae, a 20 lb bag costs $23.99. If you;re feeding 2 big dogs like I am, that bag would last 1 week.
If your not sure what dog food to purchase, see if you can get samples at the pet store and see if your dog likes them. Do not just go and buy a bag and switch your puppy over to it. You have to gradually switch the food.
I fed my dogs Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul for a while and had good results at the beginning then I started noticing the foul smell more often coming from their behinds and their stool was runny every once in a while. I now feed my dogs Natural Balance Ultra which is a little pricey. I pay $40 for a 35 pound bag. They have been on this food for almost a year and they have not had any problems.
Look at the ingredients of the bags of dog food. If you see any type of corn listed in the first 4 ingredients, I would stay away from it.
