Hi! I have a silly question: I have posted on this board before because I am currently searching for a little pup. I want a very small dog to tote around me with as my little companion. You have given me a few good suggestions and I am continuing to do research. I watched "You've Got Mail" last night and saw the cutest dog in one of the scenes. Was wondering if anyone knows what breed it could be? It's the elevator scene where Tom Hanks, his wife, and the neighbor all get stuck. Any other suggestions are appreciated too!! What do you think about Chinese Crested Powder Puff? I want something small enough and very affectionate. Thanks again!!!
I personally think chinese cresteds (both the hairless and the powder puff) are kinda weird looking. However I've also seen them at many dog shows, and they are friendly and interesting dogs. They're incredibly agile, I saw one lady playing with her powder puff and it was like watching a dog do circus tricks. That dog was pretty darned amazing. They do get taller than a chihuahua, theyr'e just a lot leaner. They also seem fragile to me because of their delicate bones, so if you have any small children you may want to get a bigger dog that might be more hardy.
Chinese Crested's are also notorious for housebreaking problems, which is why so many end up in rescues. If you decide to get one try to be as consistent as possible in regards to letting them out 'to do their thing'. They can also be very stubborn and strong willed. Like other small breeds they can also require a lot of dental work as they age. If you stick with the powderpuff vs. the hairless variety you avoid having to clothe the dog.
my best friend has a chines crested powder puff. she absolutely loves him. she says he is very smart, and obedient and is an excellent playmate for her two year old daughter. she didn't have a hard time housebreaking him. he cannot hold it as long as her two older bigger dogs so she just walks him more frequently. he did have a spell where he was marking in the house. she has all male dogs. but after she had him neutered she hasn't had a problem with that anymore.
People have also suggested: Yorkshire Terrier and Maltese. I want something small enough to take around wtih me. I also have allergies so need something that won't shed too much. As far as the dog in the movie goes, it was black and white very small looked soft with floppyish ears. If you happen to see the movie let me know!! Thanks. Keep the help coming! :)
From your description I would guess a shih tzu..but I'd have to see...click on the link (shih tzu) and see if that's the dog. If it was really really tiny, it may have been a teacup version (or puppy). But don't even get me started on people breeding 'teacups'.
Have you ever seen one in a dog show?? Nope. They are not a standard size. People breed them special because people want a rodent-sized dog they can carry in their purses. I've heard they can be a bit on the unhealthy side.
I found this on a chihuahua website: "What's A Teacup? A very small Chihuahua is sometimes referred to as a "teacup" or a "tiny teacup" for the exceptionally small ones. There are breeders who use these terms to make you think you are getting something special and will charge more these "teacups". Please don't be fooled, just as in other breeds some will be smaller than the usual size and some will be bigger. You shouldn't be paying more for a smaller size Chihuahua, in fact what you will be getting is a dog that will be susceptible to a lot of health problems not to mention its fragility will make it prone to a lot of nasty accidents which often lead to a shortened lifespan. " Now I saw on some teacup breeder's websites that they claim to breed healthy teacups blah blah. Anyway, what I found interesting is how many said they had AKC registered teacup poodles. Is this now a strandard size for a poodle? Anyone know?
More interesting info on teacups from a reputable breeder: http://hometown.aol.com/anikachis/anikteacup.html Careful how you spell shih tzu! LOL As for the difference..well, those are three very different dogs. Click on the links. The bichon is probably the biggest of the three you named, they look like very fluffy white poodles, like big cotton balls lol..the maltese is a small long haired white dog and more similar to the shih tzu. The shih tzu is a bit flater faced and with fluffy long hair..comes in different colors...really fun dogs. The shih tzu is my favorite of the three.
You can get a really small maltese..I've seen some tiny ones. You can get really small yorkies too..but beware of people who claim they breed 'teacups'. An honest breeder will tell you that it is a slang term for a runt..not something they specially bred. What about a chihuahua? You can get one around 7lbs? I like the little long-haired ones..very cute.
Maltese run around 4-6 lbs according to the breed standard, chihuahuas should be around 2-6 lbs. Yorkies are also very small dogs, running about 6 lbs. You should definitely avoid any breeder who claims to have 'teacup' varieties of any of those dogs. If you buy from a reputable breeder, you will get a dog in the weight range mentioned.
