i am so tired of people telling me to watch my dogs around my 14 month old son. it just burns me up so much!!! if people would edacate themselves and quit being so raciest aginst this wounderful breed. i was at work and talking to one of our custormers about my son and his pit bull ( this man has knowm me for a while) and this older lady ( probly from flordia)jumps in and jumps all over my case for having THAT dog around my child.i didn't say a thing and we both ignored her. i wish people would stop this stupid sh#@!!!!!!and i'll say it agian my dogs are well trained and i will not own a vicious dog!!!!this "pit bull" is one of the best dogs out of any breed that i've seen around a child/baby!!!Alex, my son can do anything and i mean anything with this dog.yes i do watch them.i know all my dogs and yes i do understand what a pit bull is capable of doing. like i said i've been around these type of dogs all my life and will never be without one the rest of my life!!!why do people do this stupid crap!!!pits bulls are one of the best dogs for children, if raised the right way!!!!there's nonthing to fear but fear itself and being unecacuted about the breed, its just a dog but that is my opion.
You don't have to explain your self to me. About 3 years ago when my hubbys friend had his son ,he was about 2 . It was Super Bowl Sunday. We where all down stairs watching the game. Alex who was 2 at the time decided to grab this hard bone and pound Tigger on the head with it. All she did was look up,not even a growl, lick him,and lay her head down ,go back to sleep.Tigger loves kids, but now she's older,so she may get old age crabby syndrome. We have to make more of a specail effort to make sure kids are respectful. Piper is a bit more standoffish to kids. You have to know your dog, and read the dogs language.Pits are dogs like any other dog. Here's another little story. When Sadie died the breeder that we got Sadie from told us we could have the pick of the litter on her next breeding(thanks Rhonda for a beautiful dog). When the time came to go get her I was talking to a friend of mine about making a trip to Groton Ct to pick my puppy up.She asked what kind of dog she was.I told her an American Pit Bull Terrier. Omg all hell broke loose. She started screamimg at me in the middle of the mall(where I worked at the time) about how evil these dogs are.She just went on and on about it. I had to walk away. She's never been to my house,I invited her to my home to meet Tigger. Tigger is so friendly,so she could see the good side of the breed, not the media hype. I asked her had she ever met any pits, she said no only seen the ones on the news.See what the media does.Leanda I know what you mean. One day I Noey out to go to bath room, one of my nieghbors drove by and yelled out, your dog is going to turn on you and bite you some day.Stupid humans.
leanda, you shouldn't take it on a personal note. unfortunatly the breed has been bred and raised for fighting, and that is all that stays in peoples minds. These are people like you said are not educated and most probably dont own dogs. Young children shouldn't be left unattented with any breed. Any large breed or small breed can unintentionaly hurt a child just playing with them. Keep loving those pits and remember what most everyone would aggree with. It's the up bringing that will determine what your pet or child will end up like.
i have a major problem with the older people from flordia up here in western n.c. i am born and raised here. they move here and try to change things to thier way and not our ways. this is my opion.they have no way of driving,oh my god its a uphill curve, lets slam on the brakes with no warning!!! and its a harmless curve. these floridits have always been a thorn in my side. i've met a few good ones but most i can't stand!!!my old neighbors from flordia yelled and treatened me while i was in my own yard with my dogs on leashes and threatened to shoot and kill my dogs!!!! trust me i called the cops and ac. ac knows my dogs, i have done pit rescues through them!!!! i really can't stand many yankees eather but there is good and bad in all of us.i can't even buy a home here because "they" move here and our realaste is sky high with the rich older people that "retire" here.it sucks big time!!!
Maybe you could move to a more pit friendly area . Real Estate here is sky high to. All The people are moving from Manhattan The Bronx, Queens, to this area ,and are commuting to work via train. They are building million dollar homes right behind us on the lake in the back.I think you just happen to meet some bad people ,not all people from Florida are bad. I'm a yankee to.Not all people from NY are bad.
this is a pit friendly area its just these people that move here and don't look these things up b4 they move here.and then just want to complain when they don't get what they want.like i said i am born and raised here. all my family from both sides live here and we have major roots here in this area.i will not leave my home.my husbands family are damn yankess and i love them with all my heart. hey i changed their minds about this wounderful breed and they love them now.i just wish people would open their hearts more and use their brain!!!
hi leanda i was wondering if you could educate me a little about the pits. it is a shame that the media has blown things way out of proportion in regards to pits. all the pits i have met at my work have all been lovely. many in homes with children. unfortunately an animal control officerr in new jersey where i live is being sued for adopting out a pit to a family with a small child. the girl got her face torn by the pit they adopted. of course there is no way to tell how this pit was raised but it seemed friendly enough to adopt out. now my question is do pits have a high prey drive like i have heard they do. and if so is it possible that even though a pit was raised correctly, could they still have that prey drive and use it inapprpriately towards a child, or a small animal? is it a case with them based just on the dogs individual personality. please don't get mad at me for asking these questions because i would just like to know for my personal education from someone who obviously has a vast knowledge of the breed. thanks
I'm really sick of the way people are about pits, too. I personally love them and hope to get one as soon as I live on my own. My parents and family basically raised me to think they were demon dogs. I didn't realize until I got to this forum that it was so not true. It's one thing to have an opinion, but dogs are destroyed because people don't understand them. I agree that peolpe should educate themselves. It's important that people know enough about the breed to have an informed opinion. I didn't until recently. Scout-- check out my old post about pitbulls ( I think it was actually just called "pitbulls"). I got a lot of cool information there. xoxo, Dorothie
Youre not obligated to respond to people like that, its best to ignore and move on. There are stereo types for lots of breeds. I have Frenchies and they get confused with pits, why I don't know? But people will go way around me on the side walk. I usually just shake my head. I had one girl so scared she slammed her body up against a bus shelter in fear. Of course I had to back up and ask her" what the hell was that?" She said she was afraid of Pits. I told her if she was going to act like that her chances of being attacked were good. And then I told her they were Frenchies not Pits, she didn't even know what a pit looked like.??? I think the best thing to do is look at them and laugh.
to scout1 : i will try to answer your questions the best that i can. here we go.the high prey drive: yes these dogs carry prey drive but i have never had a problem with my dogs here with that subject, but this is just me. i've seen border collies and cattle dogs with the worst prey drive then i've seen pit bulls.and i think that the prey drive towards children and smaller animals ( when they attack) would be the owners fault for not keeping thier dog up and this goes for any breed of dog, not watching your young child with the dogs. and the major role play is the dogs individual personality and how much time you put into your pet.same with all dogs.like i've said b4, i've done breed rescue work with these dogs and i've seen many a different pit , but they all had one thing in common: each one loved to be right there with you wanting the love and being petted was what they loved.even the ones that came from fighting homes were some of the sweetest dogs i've ever met.all they wanted was a human compain and a loving home.alot is involed with this breed. belive it or not i've never had a problem with these dogs turning on me but i've had problems with chows, dalmations and german sheperds the most with this subject and i've never been bitten by a dog.well, i guess this is just how i feel and my thoughts.
thank you leanda for responding. i guess just like you said it depends on the dog and its upbringing. i have lived with shepherds all my life and have never experienced what you have with the breed. they were wonderful companions for me and my sister when we were little.
I have to add my two cent here. I currently have a Cane Corso's, two rottweilers, one am staff and a pit bull. I do have a small child as well. I trust my dogs with all I have but I never ever leave my child unattended with them. Children just like dogs have to be taught to respect each other. I have ever nor would I allow my child to jump on, pull on, mess with there food or bone, or abuse my dogs in any way....All animals have feelings just like humans and parents wouldnt allow their child to do those things to another person so they shouldnt be allow to do it to animals either. It starts with a responsible parent of the child and the owner. So again it is the owner and not the pet. My daughter and my animals get along very well and again it is a earned respect between them.
cschimizzi: i would hate to make your dogs mad. are your dogs well trained? do you ever have aggression problems in your "pack"? i love my pits but have thought of a cane corso but i think they might be a little to much for me to take on right now. how are your dogs like?
The only time I ever have any problems at all is at feeding time....My female Rott doesnt like to share with anyone so she is fed alone. I have never had a problem with them getting along. All of my dogs are house dogs and they all have their own crates in their own room. When we are home they enjoy romping and playing in the back yard together but they enjoying being in the house following me around and just relaxing. I have been really lucky. I have two males and four females and everyone loves everybody and everything. I also have to add that all of my dogs have been through training and spend very little time in their crates so I think that is why everyone is so well balanced. Plus everyone if fixed so that helps too. We have several other animals in the house so they are well socialized.
