i wish people would mind their own business about puppy mills, and dog breeders. their are so many animal activists out there that it just drives me crazy. if you animal activist people would worry this much about abortion we probably would have less babies been killed in the world. about the aca registry it is a good registry to be in. akc has so many rules that you have to abide by. you have to make sure that you have a very unique name for your pet and if you don't you don't get to have that name for your animal. aca you get a nice certificate and they have pedigrees that you can get. so i would just research both and what ever you feel comfortable with i would do it. i chose aca. their are some good trustworthy dog breeders out there that won't give you the run around about things related to your animal or their animals. these people love their animals as if they were their own children. if you still have problems with breeders talk to some friends and family to see if they know of any good breeders that they trust. have a great day and God Bless you all.
sunflower29, we are not saying that there are no good breeders. we are clearly stating that the sick, twisted, deciteful, evil, wicked, heartless people whom are puppy millers or puppy famers are in the wrong. The people whom are puppy famers or millers must be made of stone and be heartless cruel individuals to treat dogs like this. It is uneccetable, and shouldnt be tolerated. If i had my way there would be a law that whoever is reponsible for these practises should be given a serve custodial sentence. Hope this hasnt been to intimidating, but on the subject of puppy farming, i become very annoyed Best wishes
thanks sunflowers, we really had no idea where to look for dogs from. we all are new to this and really needed your advice (I know that was sarcastic and by no means does the gunny's comment reflect the views of the staff at terrific pets.com)
Yes they want individual names to the dogs, why is that a big deal? Why would you want to register your dog as Princess? There are millions of Princesses, the name of the dog is a UNIQUE IDentifier.
DNA rules? Breeding rules? That you have to keep track of your production? That ask part of being a member they can come audit you? That you can't just register any old dog that you want?
AKC has stud books that go back to its creation. You can order a 3 or 5 generation pedagree for your dog.
AKC is a non-profit group. They donate millions to health research for animals.
What rules dont you like? That you dog must conform to the breed standard set forth by the BREED CLUB not the akc?
That you can be asked to submit DNA at any time to prove parentship of your dogs?
That popular sires require DNA verification?
Why are these rules hard to follow?
Who is an animal rights activist? AKC supports breeder rights and ownership rights. PETA wishes to let your pets go free and live in the wild. AKC helps fight canine legislation that would affect our companion animals.
"i wish people would mind their own business about puppy mills, and dog breeders. their are so many animal activists out there that it just drives me crazy."
well i wish more people would get involved in the fight against puppymills and backyard breeders. there are soooo many more people who dont do anything and think that by ignoring the situation it will go away. that drives me crazy. little by little the word is reaching more and more people. KUDOS to all those they play their part in helping animals.
Joce, I see what you are saying. The thing is, there are abortion rights activists, abortion ban activists, those who literally hug trees to save the forest, PETA, ACLU, Feed the Children, etc...Give me a break, sunflowers. You can rally behind any platform you wish and say the same thing. I can say, "If people would stop caring about their stupid trees and whether or not a grown woman makes a choice that's best for her and her fetus, then WE WOULDNT HAVE ANYMORE PUPPYMILLS AND BYB'S!" So, your argument is booty. People stand behind what they are passionate about. For you, it's some misguided idea that you should be able to make choices for what other people living in this free country do with their bodies. For me, it's those who don't have a voice, and don't have choice...These dogs...so, other than that, I would suggest you just find a new way to make money, because we ARE NOT going away, and we WILL prevail.
Well, quite frankly- breeders and puppymills ARE my business. They're everyone's business. Poor breeding practices use up valuable resources- donations, government funding, volunteer hours- money and time that could be used towards other causes. Hey- even towards fighting the disgusting lack of education our children receive in public schools regarding their birth control options- and making birth control at least half as accessible as illegal drugs are to teens and those with limited resources- which would do much more to decrease the number of abortions in this country than fighting against the practice itself.
It's always rewarding to know that a bad breeder is so offended by a discussion here that they feel the need to speak out. ;)

puppy mill and back yard breeder's are al the same.they do not breed for the love of the breed as they alway's say .it's greed for money. These pup's are sold for big dollar's and aren't even up to breed standert .I would also like to know . what is behind a champion sired dog doesit make the dog dance skip ?.There al kept the same in a kennel . it's just another way of asking more money for the pup..I feel sorry for people that buy dog's of the internet.
As a breeder, I'm open to different registries, but only use the AKC and APRI since they do not take off the street registrations and require proven pedigree and traceable lineage before registering.
I do agree with Long Dogs, as it is everyone in this 'industry's' business. I get very tired of people asking how many dogs I have, if I'm a puppy mill, etc, just because I raise dogs and am a small breeder. All many people see is the horrible images that they see from PETA or on a news show and that is just not fair to those who truly are not like that-which a vast majority are not. I feel it is neccessary to keep the honesty in purebred dog raising, as I do see trouble in the future with DNA testing and there will be a hard time finding a purebred without any past DNA lineage trouble. I am not a breeder that agrees with mix breeding, as it should be reserved for those many years of experience to create a new breed and solely for that purpose only.
I don't really feel that we have a great deal of AR's here or even people who run a horrible kennel that we would consider a mill (in my opinion, I support a breeders right to chose the best way to place their puppies as long as they feel they could have a visitor come to their kennel and not feel embarrassed or defensive of the way they care for their dogs). SOme are younger members and members who are new to the pet world who may have come here to learn. There are many breeders here, even though some of us disagree, we still try to set a clear picture of reality. That there are good breeders and how to chose one, that AR's and PETA can create a media circus with very biased and incorrect facts, and the different types of breeders that are out there.
There have been many disagreements, but I think the main point that many of us, regardless of our experience here, is we all just want all animals treated fairly with respect and it varies to different degrees. But all in all this is a group of people that are open to discussion, learning and most of the time keep an open mind to new facts.
Shanna-I advertise on the internet. I place my puppies all over the country to approved homes only and after phone interviews and referrence checks from both me and the client. I feel it is just another advertising tool-my website that is. I've found good and bad breeders in all media-newspapers, magazines, even word of mouth. So if you think of the internet as just another place to meet a breeder it isn't a bad thing at all if it's just to make the connection.
I don't agree with being able to see the pup on line and simply enter your credit card # through paypal and the deal's all done-never liked that.
