Oh boy did I just mess up !! One of my dogs has always had "issues" with bones. Meaning that she thinks all bones should belong to her. Years ago, I worked hard and long with a trainer, who told me at the time to never, ever have bones in my house. Yesterday, while at the store, I picked up a few Greenies for my dogs, and gave them out this morning. The dog in question chewed hers up, and then went over to my 14 week old puppy and took hers. I grabbed her...and the fight was on. She snarled and growled and would absolutly NOT let go of that dang Greenie. I made her sit and tried to get the bone, to no avail (she has VERY strong jaws). I made her lay down...I scolded her...I alpha rolled her...I growled at her...I picked her up...tried to pry her mouth open...all the time she is seriously growling at me. I could NOT get thet bone away from her. I finally was able to pry part of it from her mouth (it broke in half)...but she got away with the other half. She is now in her crate. Somehow....I let that dog WIN. My own stupid fault for giving them bones to begin with. She really is not normally like that AT ALL. I hope I did not just open up a can of worms.
Yikes. It sounds like you did your best though, sometimes it's hard when you don't havea 2 inch thick stick to pry their mouths open with though. At least she didn't get away with all of it. I think your dog needs to be banned from having bones, I know some people who have Akitas especially that are banned from having pigears and such for that kind of behavior. Keep buying the bones, but give them to the puppy while the other dog is crated.
my dogs can have issues over bones also. nothing as serious as what you just described. i mean i am able to stop their squabbling with just the sound of my voice. if any of them reacted the way yours does they would just never get them again. or they would be crated with the bones and when they were done they would be let out and the remainders thrown away.
Sunny, it sounds more like a "draw" than a "win" for your dog. You DID get half the bone back, and the dog got crated. Don't be so hard on yourself. I agree with Minniyar, keep getting the bones, but give them to the puppy while the other dog is crated. I, too, have this problem. My female, Kicho, constantly steels my male's bones unless they are separated. She seems to think that all treats and bones belong to her!
Thanks for all your encouragement. I should of known better with her...and kept true to my trainers advice. NO more bones unless they are crated. And it is a great idea when they want out to toss away anything they have not finished. Man ! I was SO mad this morning. Just could not BELIEVE she got the better of me ! I am after all a little bit bigger and stronger than a 15 lb dog. Oh well....that will be the LAST time she wins.
Sunny, I am laughing out loud right now. All I can do is picture you wrestling your dog for the bone. The other dog was probably thinking...."Man, I'll never try to get HER bone!" Thanks for the laugh!
Pommy...Rarelamb....you 2 have ME laughing now ! I was so mad at the time...but come to think of it, if someone had a video camera...it might just make Americas Funniest Videos ! Quite a sight it must of been. ...and Rarelamb...I got the SMALLER piece. She had it longways in her mouth with her back teeth clamped down....and everybody thinks Pitt Bulls jaws lock !!
