Please help! My husband is allergic to dogs and cats. My children and I would love to have a pet but don't want him to have to suffer through it. Are there any breeds of dog or cat that have less dander or oils or whatever it is that causes so many people to be allergic to them?
I'm allergic to dogs but have one anyway. My dad is allergic to cats and we have found that Siamese cats bother his allergies much less so that is what my parents have. It could be different for each person.
There are a few dog breeds that are hypoallergenic. These are "low dander" dogs...My DH is allergic to cats/dogs as well..he can't stand to be in the same room with a cat without having an allergy fit, but he got used to the dogs after about 2 months or so of living with them. He's in the military, so anytime he goes overseas for a period of time, he always comes back and has to get used to them all over again. Anyway, hope this helps....
Hi Bluejess: I am allergic to cats, but I own one anyway. I take pills that help me not to sneeze and sniff so much. I think that the best kind of dog/cat to get are short-haired ones when you are allergic.
I have a Bichon Frise/Westie mix and our friends and family who have allergies have no problem when they come to visit, even when they stay for a weekend or longer the other good thing is they don't shed! Hope you find the pet of your dreams.
First, there is no animal that is hypoallergenic. People are even allergic to the dander-free & hairless breeds. In those cases, it's not dander that is a problem, but saliva. I am allergic to both and am fortunate that Chinese Cresteds (both hairless & puffs) do not bother my allergies at all. In addition, they've been like immunotherapy for me as I can now tolerate most dogs.
I'm highly allergic to cats and have been told by several hairless cat owners (many hairless dog owners have hairless cats) that most people do exhibit allergic symptoms from hairless cats. Their skin is somewhat oily and those oils and/or saliva can cause the allergic reactions.
