Well Sunday night i was trying to catch my two cats to crate them. Apperantly the younger one remembered the 1,000 mile road trip he had taken a few weeks before and didnt like the idea of going in to car agian. Mishka flipped out and bit me once on both hands. I didnt think much of it. I went inside and cleaned the bites out and bandaged them up. I had to leave Mishka in NY because i couldnt catch him.
Yesterday about 24 hours after i was bit my left hand had swelled up and was turning red even though i had been icing it and taking IB Profen every 6 hours. So last night i went to the emergency room to have it checked out. After finding out i was bitten by a cat i was immeadiatly put on antibiotics through an IV. Then i was given a presciption for an oral antibiotic to. In a few hours i have to go back to the ER for another antibiotic IV.
The worst part is that my cat didnt have his rabies shot. I know it was stupid of me to not have it done. All my dogs are up to date on thiers. I just never expected to get bit by my cat. Anyways, my cat is still on the loose and no one has been able to catch him. If he isnt caught by tomorrow night i have to go back to the hospital to start a series of rabies shots. I believe its 28 shots in a period of 4 weeks. I am not looking forward to them.
So yeah. Vaccinate your kitties. Even if you dont think they are going to bite anyone.
I had the same thing happen a few years ago, I got bit didn't think anything of it until my hand turned bright red with infection even though she did have her rabies shot she had to be confined for 10 days. The owners wanted to put her to sleep so they wouldn't have to deal with her but I was able to convince them to give her to me. She bit me b/c my sisters dogs tried to attack her and when I picked her up she was so confused she bit me. I had to have x-rays done to ensure the infection didn't spread to my bone b/c that would require the IV antibiotics and worse case amputation. So even if you do get them vaccinated you still could contract an infection from them.

Cat scratches and bites can be very nasty. Thus the term 'cat scratch fever'. I've had scratches get hot and swollen, nasty looking, treated them with compresses, hydrogen peroxide and neosporin. I sincerely hope your cat turns up, a rabies regimen is not anything I'd even wish on an enemy.
Oh, not fun. I do hope your cat shows up. I would hate for you to have to go through the rabies shots. I have been bitten twice at work and they sent me immediately to the doctor who put me on antibiotics and ibuprophen. We had a girl who spent a week in the hospital because of a cat bite. Not fun....nasty those bites can be! Hope you're hands are feeling better soon!
We werent able to catch my cat. He is still on the loose. I started the rabies shots today. That was no fun. 4 shots in the butt and 1 in the arm. The finally took out the IV that had been in my arm for 3 days though. Tomorrow i have to go back for another check up and possibly another IV. Then Friday i go back for another rabies shot.
a few years back ,i adopted a cat from the shelter and never could completely tame him.he got out the door and would come up to the house to eat but wouldnt let me catch him. when we moved i couldnt leave him behind so i had my friend help me corner him. when i got ahold of him he went nuts. i tried to pin him between my legs while yelling for my friend to throw her coat over him. he bit me all over my legs and arms and shredded alot of skin off my arms. i dont know why i didnt let him go but i did catch him. i spent all night in the E.R getting patched and stitched and a tetnus shot to boot. and he ended up ripping up the window screen and escaping again two days later. and i suffered for close to a month from all my wounds. i will NEVER mess with a cat again . i would take on 10 dogs as opposed to one wild cat in a heartbeat !
Wow dusty i feel for you. I know how bad my hands have felt for the last week. I cant imagine going through it for a month. Good thing there is good drugs out there like vicodin. lol
Schnoodles i had to have the rabies shots because my family couldnt catch the cat and he didnt have his rabies shots. They are doing the shots as a precaution incase he did have rabies. Yes the shots do hurt. They arent to bad when they do them but the day after is pretty bad. My butt and my shoulder ache like you wouldnt belive.
No they still havent caught my cat yet. My sister thinks that he might have run away.
After this experience i will never own another cat. I have now been bit by both dogs and cats. I would take a dog bit anyday.
Wow, just wanted to say I'm sorry that happened to you and I hope you're feeling better soon.
On a more positive note, and I guess I'm going to show my age here, but a long, long time ago when they did rabies shots they did them in your stomach. Not that it will help, but at least it's better than that. That has got to be extrememly painful.
I remember when we were kids and my brother was walking home from school. A dog got out of the fence and bit him and they were going to have to do the shots on him, but we finally were able to track down the owner.
my friend and i were playing and we dicided to go home so we ran and a dog followed and bit my friend and they think that there was a tooth in her skin we were only in 2nd grade. they had the dog where this thing for a couple of months and now he never ever barks but i dont know about bitting. so sorry.
