a couple weeks ago my neighbor shot my poodle. is there a law to protect the dog if this happens? he was okay but the bill for x rays and medicine was high. is there anything i could do if it were to happen again?
we did call the cops got a report and then called animal control. they just talked to them if even that. no he was in their yard and they shot him. the cop said the only reason they would have to shoot him is if threaten thier life which is he a 10 lb poodle. and thier cats always goes through our trash and tear the bags and we never shoot thier pets!
Don't let it happen again. Contact the police and tell them. They should go and speak to this person. Why did he shoot the dog? If he did it just to be mean, he should be responsible for the vet bills.
You should call the local PD, if your pet was in your yard and he shot your pet from his yard he can be arrested for reckless use of a fire arm, if he has threatened you or your dog that you know of in the past with his gun in plain view he could be arrested for brandishing a fire arm. But again your state and local laws may differ from mine, I live in VA. It may be hard to prove since it is after the fact but if you still have the bullet or the bullet is still lodged in your pup and can be removed it can be linked to his gun if they can confiscate the gun that was used in the crime. More then likely he will say it was an accident but still would or could be arrested for reckless use of a fire arm and endangering others. He also my have a license to conceal or carry a gun which would make the situation a little more sticky. But I would call the PD most PD's do not take this lightly.
Wrote this before I saw you called the PD...ok so that is done :) and good for you for reporting it.

Maybe the man is deathly afraid of animals. It is legal to shoot a dog when he/she comes on to your property in some, (I'd venture to guess most, but don't know for sure) states. That's definitely a fact. If your dog went on to his property he was within his rights, here in GA, at least, to shoot it. I only know that about here because when my neighbors' dog came into my yard and attacked my dog, the police simply said, "We can't do anything about it, ma'am, but if I were you, I'd buy a gun and shoot the dern bugger if he comes over here again." Of course I questioned him on that one, and he said it is indeed legal for me to shoot the dog.
It's not animal cruelty, though I don't agree, there's most likely not much that will be done. Who knows, though, depends on the state you live in. And the firearm regulations, whether or not you can prove it, and it might be all he has to say is it was attacking his cat! Most won't get charged with illegal firearm discharge in residential area, or whatever, if they shoot a rapist or burglar. I believe the same would go for a dog, one which he can say was a 'threat'.
So sorry this happened to you :( Hope it doesn't sound like I'm saying he was right, or that he should get away with it, I'm not, at all. I think it sucks, but I just don't think there's anyting you can do about it. Let us know how it goes!
